Because the Lakers were also in the running for the #1 pick and there were a bunch of salty Lakers fans due to them not winning the lottery and getting Ingram instead

I thought they had already done the drawing that day.

What actually happened was several Sixers Legends were given a “script” tweet to send out IF the Sixers hit the first pick. Mutombo didn’t read the instructions carefully and sent it out prematurely. A lot of fans freaked that it would cause bad luck but it all worked out at the end and we got Ben Simmons. Umm, wait a second…

I have never seen anyone say that, and it’s not like that pick did us any good in the long run tbh

I think adding to all the fire was that Hinkie was forced out at the end of this season fueling the suspicion that there was some quid pro quo going on.
The team failed to land the #1 pick for 3 straight years and they get it when Hinkie is finally gone.
Obviously it’s all conspiracy theory, but to me the draft lottery just feels controlled by the league ever since Cleveland got the #1 pick in 2014. All the talk that summer was about Lebron possibly going home and they needed assets to lure him to come back. What better way to get an insane asset out of thin air than the #1 pick when they were like the 5th or 6th worst team that year.
