I remember watching this live, I was just a kid, though so I don't remember him not being paid – I'm certain that would've been on the local news for a while, but I don't remember that bit at all.
I mean it's just like these lottery tickets or wheel of fortune, they pay a very small amount over decades and if you somehow violated the rules they'll find any excuse to not pay you. It just goes to show, don't buy the lottery tickets in the first place.

I for one hear that Michael Jordan was a hard person to work with on the field. This I would say had more to do with delegation. One has to be hard but if you work hard and expect others to work just as hard. This might be very frustrating for some who wants full management of the events. That said for Michael Jordan to do this with his team suggests that he expects results as one should expect them. I for one don't know him. Yet to me actions are of higher value than words. Seems he is also in the same mind set. One has to work hard to get what you want. Yet one should get payed for that as well. One has to respect that from him.

TLDR, it was in the rules that you must not have played in a basketball team within 5 years in order to qualify. They made him take a shot anyway. The MJ talked to the ownership and told them they need to pay up. So he got paid.
