Celtics play by play broadcaster Mike Gorman to retire at end of season after calling 42 seasons

“If I had to pin myself down, I would say, ‘Yeah, next year will probably be my last year,’” Gorman said ahead of his 42nd season as the voice of the Celtics. “If we were looking at the roster from the ’90s right now, I’d be saying, ‘I’m done.’ But this team has a chance to win a championship and I’d just like to be around for that.”

Damn he’s a legend. Will be sad to see him go. I wonder if they’ll slide Grande in there alongside Scal and/or Eddie House.

  2. ripmeleedair

One of the best. Knew to let Tommy cook, knows when to let you hear the crowd. Gunna miss him a lot when he’s done.

Ah shit. Love Mike. Truly a great play by play guy, and like someone said, he always knew when to let Heinsohn cook, hah.

That’s a real bummer. Wonder if Grande slides in?

Lord help Celtics fans who will have to listen to Brian Scalabrine and whoever else they throw in Mike’s seat every night.

Mike Gorman, Len Berman, and Bill Rafftery are icons of the Big East early years and played an important role in its meteoric rise!!

    Enjoy retirement!!!

Man saw that JB contract and was disgusted 🤮

  7. usmarine7041

I like him, but his Moderna commercials that would play DURING THE FUCKING GAME need to be retired as well

I love Mike. Guy has been the voice of the Celtics for my entire life, he *is* the Celtics to me.

That said, there were some times last year where he seemed to be showing his age a bit. Doesn’t bother me and id listen to him for 10 more years, but it feels like time unfortunately.

    I’ll miss Mike Gorman. He’s a pro.

I fear the replacement will be Sean Grandeosity.

Grande is not my cup of tea. Too much emotional intensity, hyperbole, and tortured stats.

  10. sling_dinger

Harrington talkin to pierce, and Joe deroza telling em to shut up

  11. doodlols

I love Mike, but I am so pumped for Grande to take over.

Class act. My favorite Boston media person by far.

these fuckers better not fuck around this year and hoping the health gods favor us. Let’s chip up for gorman.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Goddammit. I knew it was coming, but I’m just not ready. Gorman is one of the greats. It takes a lot to know when the TV audience just needs to hear the roar of the crowd, and he was the goat of that, while calling every game with class and respect. He’ll be dearly missed by the fan base.

I thought about this recently…I’m 34 and I’ve been watching the Celtics since I was a little kid, almost every game. He talks for 2-3 hours straight every game…it’s entirely possible that I’ve listened to his voice more than anyone else’s in my life besides possibly my mom.

Mike graduated Boston tech in ‘66 in the same class as my uncle. Much of my family is from dorchester like him. He honestly feels like an extension of my own family.
I can’t express how much love I have for that man

  17. He’s been very very good for a long time . Happy he’s gonna go out on top after this season

  18. Internal_Regret9378

NBC Sports needs to secure an agreement with Mike and Tommy’s families to allow A.I. Mike & Tommy Celtics broadcasts. Wish it could be done for legends like them and Marv Albert.

  19. Smellmyhand

Everyone needs to read this. Great article about a legend

Just give the job to Garnett and Pierce and put a parental advisory before the broadcast.

  21. siphillis

Don’t love the Celtics broadcast, but Gorman was always fantastic on the call. Not sure who can fill his shoes.

  22. TheRealRandyMarsh7

    Bergeron yesterday, Gorman today. Stopppppp

  23. PepeSylvia11

The best play-by-play commentator the NBA has ever known, and it’s not particularly close.

  24. DaRealMothMan

I’m not a Celtics fan, but I live in the north east so I get all of their games on TV. Mike is a legend. Only Harlan is ahead of him for me. He’s one of those guys that makes you wanna tune in just for a random Monday night game in January.

  25. Serious-Situation672

Mike Gorman: The real MVP of basketball commentary. Legend in the booth!

  26. HolyZest

    Damn 🙁

My childhood watching sports was Don orsillo, Mike Gorman, Tommy heinsohn, and Jack Edwards. This’ll just leave Jack, and he’s probably gonna retire soon too

  27. Dang, he’s such an iconic voice to me watching league pass growing up.

I’m obviously biased towards liking our announcers, but I always like listening to his calls, Ralph Lawler as well for the Clippers and Eric Reid for the Heat are the ones that stand out the most to me. I forgot, add Kevin Calabro to that list for me

  28. teddytwelvetoes

damn. assuming that Scal remains, I may have already listened to Gorman for the last time 🙁

  29. jgod213

This is my Johnny Carson retiring.

I had the chance to say hello to him at halftime once at a road game. Usher let me wait by the broadcast area for him to come back. I didn’t want to bother him so I just told him ‘Hey Mike, huge Celts fan. Just wanted to say you’re the best and thank you.’

He grinned, stuck out his hand, and asked me where I was from. We chatted for a few minutes. It was weird because I knew I wasn’t supposed to be star struck by Mike frickin Gorman, but I couldn’t help it. I grew up watching him, and watching with him for ~30 years.

I know Tommy was THE Celtic. But Mike….I dunno. He was like your uncle or grandfather that loved basketball and loved to watch it with you.

I’m going to miss that a lot.

  30. Reddit_FuckingSucks_

this better be the fucking year

  31. Iconic voice! You did good Mike it’s time to enjoy it now.

  32. Grudagreat

Thank God bro is the most boring commentator in sports. He puts people to sleep when he commentates, no energy, no joy.
