  1. If they offer him 5-6 million less per year I think he still signs the deal and under the new CBA that extra money is a much bigger difference in getting a third piece than it is today. That's why I think this is a terrible deal.

  2. He's not even a top 10 player or best player on his team. They will regret this, but shit what choice did they have?

  3. Jaylen Brown is without a doubt a top 15 player for everyone who thinks after ONE bad playoff series he's all of a sudden some top 40 player remember that he's played ¹05 playoff games and 18 series with a 58-47 playoff record. He's had far more playoff success than most of the dudes in the NBA and he's been the 1st or 2nd best player for the Celtics in majority of his playoff series outside of his rookie season.

  4. C'mon now. He's long, can shoot the 3, and defend. Finals last year, went to game 7 in the ECF this year. Odds are with the Tatum/Brown core wins at least 1 ring in the next 5 years. It's the only version where you have a convincing championship window. You need guys who can outright steal playoff games in late May or June.

Better question: should the Clips run it back with PG and Kawhi? Answer: Of course. It's the only version where you have a convincing championship window. You need guys who can outright steal playoff games in late May or June.

Rule: you don't close championship windows.

Oh, and the Cs got rid of the problem: Marcus Smart. I'd advocate for a coaching change but whatever.

  5. Also Ryen is ridiculous for saying dudes shouldn't be eligible for the Supermax because they won the DPOY.

  6. these raw number comparisons are dumb. supermax is 35% of the cap. whether it was 2018 or 2021 or 2024, that will be the case. and brown is not a supermax caliber player

  7. This is going to blow up in Bostons face. No championship any time soon.

  8. fantasic video, ryen's reasonable takes and willingness to discuss his bad calls is so refreshing in a morass of self promotion in the sports media market, keep it up my brother!

  9. If I'm understanding the new CBA teams will only be able to pay two superstars barring huge pay cuts. If so, to have Brown as your #2 is definitely worth it.

  10. 7th best in WS, 8th in VORP, 13th WS/48 in his own draft class…Not saying he's even out of the top 5 but he shouldn't be making leaps & bounds more than guys like Sabonis

  11. There are honestly times when I genuinely believe jaylen is the best player on that team so he definitely deserves it

  12. It's 35% of the market value of a roster, the cap. The Cap went up and he qualified for 35%. I'm not sure why anyone is having trouble with this concept. The opportunity cost of losing him was much worse. You keep an asset to be used as you see fit.

  13. Look at this orange egg salty that a Black man is getting “too much money”. Guess who keeps the money if it’s not paid to the players (the money
    makers)? Billionaire, old white owners.

  14. I think Jaylen Brown is a cool guy and I'm happy he got a bag.
I hear what you're saying about the cap going up and that's fine but
The reason I don't like this is that this man made one all NBA team in a contract year and thus is eligible to get the biggest contract in NBA history?

And the thing about the salary cap going up, didn't they just add some weird tournament because no one is watching the regular season? Why should we assume the salary cap is going to go up?!
You want the regular season to matter? Make every year a contract year for everyone!
In other words, there are two salary caps. One is like $60M and doesn't change from year to year. I dunno if 60 is the optimal number but it's around there probably.
Next, the nba compiles data and rankings from everyone and every player is given a number 1-20. If you are a 20 you make $20M. (If your team is like the Thunder and you are getting a lot of good young players and their rankings go up, you would be allowed to go over the cap but you could only acquire $1M players if you need to fill roster spots.)
Next they put a value on various achievements based on what the tv contract is doing. I think the highest pay out should be finals MVP bc the goal should be winning the championship and the MVP is the person who contributed most to the ultimate goal. Then regular season mvp, dpoy, allNBA, etc…
So in that way you could make $70, 80, 90M whatever because the second salary cap is no salary cap.

I don't think Jaylen Brown is the type but let's say this was Ben Simmons or Zion making one all NBA team in a contract year, getting a $300M contract, you think they're going to keep working on their game? In this system, someone and probably soon is going to get this guaranteed money and fall off a cliff production-wise.
And it's bad for team building and this bad for ratings and bad for the league and thus bad for the players.
Again, Jaylen Brown is a really smart guy and i hope he makes another huge leap and makes all NBA every year of this deal, but that's just hope and it cost $300M

  15. TV money kind of depends on how TV is doing. for instance ESPN is not doing great. Its a dying beast firing ppl and cutting costs on 1 side. Disneys lookin to find a partner for it – some betting firm.. viewership is down. ABCs last NBA season is worst rated ever 🙂
We all know that NBA finals are in a hole , MJs shot has been watched by 36mill ppl in a country that had 50mill ppl less then today.. nowdays if they get to 15mill theyre happy – game 3 of 2020 finals was watched by less then 6mill , fact of the matter is – last 5 years are the worst period in history of the NBA. I could give an opinion about reasons – I kind of predicted this some time a go.. but that is not relevant.
Of course they double down on what theyre doing – cause thats what media does. Disney keeps making movies same way and they keep loosing money ' around a billion this year just on movie flops .. so as this money keeps ballooning my guess is there will be a steep end point..

It may turn out that the whole sport has a big problem, eventually in 5-10 years, they may start getting day jobs in the summer like in the old days, then we can call them plumbers and firemen too , wouldnt that be something..

As for the reasons, if anyones still reading – disrespect for the fans is a big 1 -you cant F-around with paying customer , another 1 is guys taking themselves too seriously – same thing is happening with hollywood (theyre preaching to ppl, flying jets to meetings about climate change) compare that to generation that made this sport great back in the 8s and 90s, like comparing Stern to Silver.. a big one is also politics – this might be unpopular opinion. Whatever side youre on once you chose a side and start advocating aggressively you lose half of your audience, demonizing them doesnt help soften that. Having an opinion is 1 thing but excluding those who disagree is another.

Theres a more subtle reason also – AAU is killing the team spirit in young ppl. Thats showing in the way they play, whitout understanding team concepts of the game. 1 of the most potent offenses is not used anymore cause ppl cant figure it out, they use just some of the actions from the triangle, but the whole concept is dead. It is also visible when young guys come from Europe and they hit the ground running, theyre great at team play, theyre good shooters, passers, they poses well rounded game, theyre hard workers. Look at jokic, luka, but even a lesser known players – Bojan or Bogdan, or Wemby… no matter the size theyre IQ of the game is great. another problem that AAU creates is that by pulling boys away from the school it kind of kills the wide bases for the game – boys that are not great talents are separated early from the good ones and that way lot of them lose the love of the game. but wide bases is important, cause fans are what makes a game great – and that fan base is growing from the wide base of the game it self. I played for a short time in highschool with a great player and that experience shaped me into lifetime fan of the game though I never had talent to compete. On the other hand it didnt hurt the good player but taught him how to treat even the bad players on the team with respect

  16. Ryen is speaking as a life long Celtics fan, grasping at straws to explain how this is a good signing.
