The Pelicans’ biggest concern with Dyson Daniels
After his up-and-down performance in the Summer League, here’s the Pelicans’ biggest concern about second-year guard Dyson Daniels.
When an NBA team plays against a second-year player in the Summer League, you want to see them dominate. They should look like they are literally and figuratively playing in a league above their competition. Unfortunately, Dyson Daniels of the New Orleans Pelicans fell somewhere in the middle.
After the Summer League, the Pelicans’ main concern regarding Daniels for the 2023-24 season is his lack of threat in his shooting. While his primary contribution on offense is as a connector, without a reliable shot, he may struggle to maximize his potential on the court. Although he can create offense for himself and his teammates in favorable situations, during traffic, he seems to lack a clear plan or a reliable scoring tool. This lack of reliable shooting affects his plays, as demonstrated in one example during the Summer League where his floater missed the target.
Dyson Daniels has had an inconsistent performance in his previous three seasons, with below-average shooting from three-pointers and free throws. He needs to improve his effectiveness in catch-and-shoot and pull-up jumpers to stand out in today’s NBA, especially during the playoffs. The New Orleans team allowed him to work on these skills during the Summer League, but the results were not entirely satisfying.
During the Summer League, in five games, Daniels averaged 14.6 points with a 34.72% field goal percentage and only 10% from three-pointers. His free throw shooting was also below the ideal, with 67.74% accuracy. However, he showcased solid skills in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, making him a versatile player. Nevertheless, his limitations as a shooter and scorer make it challenging for him to secure a consistent spot in the New Orleans rotation.
Daniels needs to improve offensively to stand out in the Pelicans in 2023-24. His position on the team will depend on advancements in his shooting and scoring skills following an uneven performance in the Summer League.
