Revisiting the Steven Adams and Ziaire Williams for Jonas Valanciunas and Trey Murphy III trade

It’s been two years since the Grizzlies and Pelicans traded Steven Adams and Jonas Valanciunas for each other, along with Eric Bledose, the draft rights to Ziaire Williams, Trey Murphy III and draft considerations. This episode reviews the impact of that trade on both franchises, looks at what happened to the 2nd round picks involved and the 1st rounder from the Lakers that never conveyed, plus discusses some “what ifs” surrounding the transaction.

  1. Adams is a better fit than JV, but I said on draft night (now its a easy decision) that I wanted Murphy. As I said by the time he is a sf version of Bane. Man, I wish we would drafted him.

  2. That pick was so frustrating. Also that Murphy III was the type of player they'd generally take (experienced, productive, college player). Pelicans drafted better at SF in that single draft (Murphy III, Jones), than Kleiman ever has with SFs.
Hopefully that ends in a few yrs when GG develops.

  3. Great nuanced, smart analysis here. Thanks for breaking it all down for us Keith 🙌🏽🙌🏽

  4. Steven Adams was a HUGE contributing factor to Ja's breakout Year 3. Having him instead of JV accelerated Ja's ascension. Trey Murphy III at 17 is such a crapshoot. There aren't many players that have turned out like him in that draft range.

I still have hope for Z-Will but his own confidence took a hit with performance last year.
