People get it very twisted when it comes to Jordan's Wizard years "tarnishing his legacy." The thing is, the mentality that brought him back to the Wizards and made him play as hard as he did, win lose or draw, was the same mentality that gave us the Jordan people remember and love on the Bulls. Was he as great or as efficient on the Wizards? No, not even close, and it's hyperbole when Jordan fans claim he was. We have to be honest, he wasn't the same. And it's very valid and true that someone like LeBron has had much more consistent durability and longevity as he's aged than MJ had (of course, Jordan also didn't benefit from load management as much either.) But consider the following facts:
On the Wizards, he took almost the worst defensive team in the league, and almost singlehandedly turned it into one of the best defensive teams in the league (in terms of production limitation of the opposing teams.) He took a team that wasn't even close to being in the playoff hunt, to a team that was in the hunt for a legit 1st seed in their conference until he got hurt. In his Wizards years he became the oldest player in NBA history to have 40 and 50 point games. And in his final year with the Wizards, at age 40, he averaged 37 minutes, played all 82 games, averaged 20 ppg, 6.1 boards, 3.8 assists, and 1.5 steals a game. (Which, btw, is what LeBron averages in steals for his entire career. I'm just saying.)
He was still doing crazy full court chase down snatch blocks at the rim and had insane hustle at that age. He was still playing both ends aggressively, still playing every game, every night, for 34+ minutes a night, and still capable of torching a team when he got hot. That same relentless competitive drive was still there, and for better or worse, that's just who MJ was as a basketball player. He was gonna go down swinging. And that's what produced prime Jordan, too. He wouldn't have been the Jordan he was in his prime, if he wasn't also the Jordan who was determined to come play for the Wizards the way he did.
Regardless of if Wizards MJ was not that bad. It caused a significant gimp in Jordan's stats which come off as weaknesses in MJ's game.
Wizards MJ is underrated? Perhaps. But his return to the Wizards still did more harm than good.
I would not have a problem with Wizards MJ if normal Jordan's stats were unaffected. But Wizards Jordan is single handedly respinsible for MJ's field goak percentage not being 51%.
The average person cannot watch every game easily. What people have are stats. And Jordan as a Wizard destroyed Jordan's legendary stats. Makes him seem worse
Shout out from the Philippines 😂
Jordan's wizard numbers are very similar to lebrons' rookie of the year numbers. Are jordan numbers eith the wizards still garbage?
