Waiting On Potential: Archie Goodwin! Stunted Growth

Archie Goodwin has been compared to elite talents like John Wall, Tyreke Evans and Kevin Durant. All warranted leaving high school ranked as high as 9th overall prospect, heading to a program in Kentucky, known to recruit the best, and push prospects straight through to the NBA draft at the highest rate as of recent. As far as Gatorade player of the year, he won that award for the state of Arkansas twice, as well as a state championship and McDonald’s all American. What helped Archie’s game is that it was eerily similar in mixture of all the guys mentioned, but being 6’5, he could play both shooting guard and the point guard position and with some development, physically, maybe even the small forward position as well. This all made the potential seen in him skyrocket into him being considered a serious candidate to be a one and done NBA draft pick, but also too much in expectation for the 18 year old heading into Kentucky, who had just won the national championship, and had arguably the best freshman in Kentucky history and most successful under Coach Calipari. Their entire starting five down to the 7th man all made it to the NBA, leaving big shoes to fill for whatever was to come next. Archie didn’t disappoint at all, eventually leading the Wildcats in scoring as a freshman, excelling for his ability to get to the rim at will, long arms to finish when he got there, and a gracious athlete on the floor or in the air, so his high flying dunks and acrobatic layups were a thing of beauty that wowed scouts. He was taken in the first round by the Phoenix Suns, were they waited long enough for his potential. Waiting On Potential: Archie Goodwin! Stunted Growth

  1. Archie Goodwin really had the tools to be a star, but straddled that line between too good to stay and develop them, and leave for a potential once in a lifetime opportunity. He at least got the chance, but timing and circumstances in Phoenix caused him to be out the league too soon.

  2. Here in Central Arkansas, we heard that Coach Cal pretty much made him leave after one year due to the Freshmen coming in.

  3. I love your content man can you do one on CJ Fair is my favorite Syracuse I don't know why you didn't like the NBA

  4. Shooting 64% from the line and under 30% from three in college is not a smooth jumper.. Durant is also 7ft and Goodwin is 6’5.. and Durant is a tremendous shooter. Bad comparison. Goodwin was a better athlete than skill player, but he wasn’t a good enough shooter or creator for others to stick in the league

  5. I remember a few years ago he was in a pro am that my cousin was in and he shot an air ball. Someone yelled out, "who shot that shit?" Someone replied "Archie!" Then someone said, "awe hell naw how is he in the league shooting like that?" Them dudes in Little Rock really hoop all day

  6. Being from Little Rock, he was one of the first guys I looked up to. Before Bobby Portis, Malik Monk, Moses Moody and Nick Smith Jr. He was a lot of hoopers around my age’s inspiration.

  7. As a Kentucky fan I really liked Archie & always thought had he came back one more year & played with that 2013 class his pro career may have played out different. He would have played on a better team in turn would have made him better then been a higher pick landed in a more ideal spot to develop. Suns were too guard heavy

  8. I'll never forget when I played my friend in 2k12 or 13 and I was going off with Goodwin and he had a posterizer dunk and my friend yelled out "MAN, HE NOT EVEN THAT GOOD YET!!!" Lmao

  9. I can’t flawg bro u be throwing me with what u be sayin , you shit on guys for bein 6’4 6’3 two guards but say this guy at 6’5 can play point shooting and small forward ? Why he ain’t undersized for the 3 then ? Aren’t those guys 6’7 and up ?

  10. As a Suns fan. We did Archie, Josh Jackson and Chriss a disservice. There was too much dysfunction and lack of leadership on the Suns at that time. They were all talented and could've been better players with better development.
