Raptors Future Salary Cap

I thought I’d take a look at the Raptors future salary cap after all the Siakam trade rumors and OG + Gary extension talks.

I’ll look at our salary cap for the next 5 years. I assume the cap rises by 10% each year and the luxury tax rate is 121% of the salary cap. [Current contracts](https://www.spotrac.com/nba/toronto-raptors/cap/) are taken from Spotrac.

**Note1:** The “Space” row is our cap space **under** the **luxury tax**.

**Note2:** The italic numbers in the table are projected salaries.

I’ve assumed:

1. **Siakam** gets a 4-year max starting at **30%** of the cap.
2. **OG** gets a 4-year extension starting at **21%** of the cap (similar to Jerami Grant).
3. **Gary** gets a 4-year extension starting at **18%** of the cap (similar to Anfernee Simons).
4. **Scottie** gets a 3-year rookie max extension starting at **25%** of the cap.

In summary, based on the assumption that the cap rises by 10% each year, we have the ability to re-sign our core guys (Siakam, OG, Trent and Scottie) and still have some wiggle room to fill out the rest of the roster and stay under the luxury tax.

If we perform well in the next couple of years then we would could go over the tax and up to the 2nd apron and have even more space to fill out the roster. If we underperform, we can still re-sign all of our guys now and have the flexibility to trade them later.

    Uh

Why only 3 years? Genuinely trying to think of the last time a lottery rookie went for a 3 year extension vs a 4-5 year extension when given the rookie max

Closest I can think of is Ayton getting only 4 years because Robert Sarver’s cheap, racist ass didn’t want to pay him 5 years

Looks like a fairly expensive team with a pretty low ceiling, also I think you’re a tad high on Gary’s amount but that’s about it.

Agreed, but the main thing I would say here is that Gary isn’t getting $121M/4. He opted into his $18.6M this year because he wasn’t getting better than that on the open market. He doesn’t have the ball-handling or creation ability that Simons does. I would bet something more in the range of $80M/4 would be closer to the right range.

Also, 2027-28 should account for a 25% max for Gradey. Call me optimistic 🙂

I agree the worry about the cap crunch is pretty overdone.

I’d say OG probably signs for a bit more than you have and GTJ a bit less. Other than that though seems reasonable.

We’d also have to re-sign Precious, but Boucher as an expiring is probably something we can send out without having to give up assets.

What happens if the price to keep OG ends up being a max? Somebody just reminded me that the Rockets maxed Fred despite reported lowball offers for him at the trade deadline.

If he gets offered a Max, is the cap sheet fucked?

Thats a Mess. Should have thrown the towel and done a full rebuild. You cant win anything if your pay that much to that core. Its still not to late, Masai, this can be salvaged.

What is really sad we woulda had fred back for like 30 to 35 mill if houston ain’t c*ck block and max him out..wtf was this organization thinking.. they was gonna cave to his 30 mill sprinkle a little mill on top

Uh, Pay the tax? Surely you jest. Why would We expect the owners to pay the tax? Just because that’s what it takes To field a successful team in this league? Don’t you know there is parity, and therefore we should be content with an average team until we get lucky?
