Cam Thomas says he’d average 25 as a starter. Nets should let him try

Cam Thomas has been making some media rounds this summer and becoming more forward-facing about his career and time with the Nets. It’s been a refreshing look at the young guard’s mindset and his expectations for the upcoming season. In a recent talk he mentioned that if he started in the NBA he could average 25 points per game, a big number and yet still somehow believable.

Doug Norrie talks about Cam Thomas’s recent media tidbits and the expectation going into this season. What should the Nets do regarding Thomas this season, is this going to be a breakout campaign and where should his spot in the rotation be?

  1. I still wonder what we could get for him on so many levels.

He is an exceptional talent and I loved what he contributed in the middle of that Durant/Irving absence during the trade.

Where would you put him in the starting line and who are you sitting down?

  2. Cam should at very least be a 6th man on watever team he on this year but I would keep him and give him shot to start

  3. Mikal bridges and claxton are obvious starters with cam Thomas , cam johnson and Spence . Got a lot of guys for rotational pieces and certain games may want to go slightly bigger but for most part that what is like to see for Thomas to get a successful chance he going to have to be a willing defender and actually try on both ends or even if they give him a chance the team will lose more often than not . He is a little guard that already makes him a body to target for the other team a small guard is a defensive liability if he not focused at least on doing everything he can . There no reason why he can’t play hard on both ends though he young and hungry

  4. He's a shot hog that's out for himself. His mentality is not to make other people better, just to score. He hasn't earned the right to get the ball and take the shot every time, like superstars have. So JV is right to keep him benched until he learns to share the ball.

  5. I want to see:

    Simmons
    Thomas
    Mikal
    C. Johnson
    Claxton

Simmons and Cam first 2 off the bench to start the season. I figure DFS and Dinwiddie will start early.

10 man rotation. Royce, Dennis, Sharpe… next 3 off the bench.

  6. All I remember is that when he misses, the opponent has a fast break. He can't play any defense at all.

  7. The Rockets owning The Nets future will be the reason why Cam will never have a fair shake at developing which is a shame because he has the ability to be a star.

  8. Could we have two, totally different top seven/eight squads for the first two weeks. Has any team done that before in the NBA?

  9. There coaches precisely because of players like Cam Thomas. Jaque must train him to be a PG. what are coaches being paid for?

  10. He definitely can avg 25 The playing time thing JV does not play everyone all the time. You know players get a lot of DMP on this roster

  11. I agree with you Doug that we have to give him enough minutes to see what he brings to the table playing with various rotation combos. It will be up to him to prove he has enough all around game to be rank high in the rotation. I’m skeptical that he can play well enough to start or be 6th man at this point. Lonnie Walker and Dennis Smith deserve that chance as well. I think CT’s value right now is an off the bench scorer.

  12. Forget about what the kid has to earn this isn’t the 90’s so many dudes don’t play defense. This is the type of team a kid like Cam Thomas should get minutes. You have a bunch guys who lack shot creation and are supposedly defensive oriented. A coach should be good enough to be able to hide a subpar scorer with better defenders. Donovan Mitchel is not a great defender. A lot of this is about where he was drafted. If he was drafted onto a really bad team out the gate the perception of him would be different.

  13. When Cam was asked "What are you working on in the offseason?" He said 3pt shooting & conditioning. Which is fine for any other player. But no mention to improving his playmaking & D'?

  14. Cam was asked "What did Jacque tell you to work on to earn more minutes?" His answer was "Im looking forward to having that conversation with JV". Really? Vaughn never talked with him? Its hard to decide if the problem is more Cam's reluctance to round out his game OR is it the Nets coaching staff complete incompetance in this area? I dk in watching Bball since the 80's if I've ever seen anything like this? Beyond frustrating!

  15. The Nets s/b throwing out a l/u of CT- Mikael- Whitehead- CJ- Clax & telling Clax go out & create, take guys off the dribble & shoot jumpers. Who cares whether the Nets win 28games or 42 games? Even if Ben comes back at 90% we are not competing with Bos, Mil or even the Cavs. Develop & build around Thomas, Dariq & Clax.

  16. Somehow the Nets have a combined 100min to give to DFS, O'Neale & Dinwiddie but no min to give to our young players. Apparently Nets mgmt has a visceral hatred for the Rockets & wont sleep at night if Hou ends up with the 5th or 6th overall pick in a terrible Draft.

  17. Not sure what's everyone's obsession with Cam. He doesn't play defense and just doesn't know how to be a facilitator. I have seen so many games where he just jacks up shots. He does not pass. Do you guys really trust him on the floor in end of game situations? At times given the opportunity he can score a lot of points but at what expense?

  18. Im sure he could average 25. Now would that team win more than 30 games? That I seriously doubt. If the guy just wants to score a bunch of points, he'll end up playing overseas somewhere. He'll need to give a little more than a bunch of isos, nobody is gonna stand around for the Cam Thomas show. Certainly not Mikayl and the other Cam.

  19. Cam Thomas better start practicing them catch and shoot 3's and stop practicing them dumbass wild shots like Mikal Bridges said …. Otherwise his spot will be taken by Lonnie Walker…
