Richaun Holmes is a sneaky good pickup by the Mavs. Let’s talk about it.

  1. For me, Holmes is Powell on offense (good screener, good role man, good offensive rebounder), just with a push-jump-shot. So he has a midrange game. And on defense he is a way better rebounder and even a better shot blocker then Powell, while also having a very good lateral quickness and switchability like Powell.

So overall, he should be a better version of Powell. And thats better then everything we had last season. Cause even if casuals do not want to admit it, Powell was our only big that didnt hurt the team on average when on the court. His NetRtg was + 6.5… every other Mavs big (Wood/Maxi/McGee) had a neg NetRtg… If Holmes can give us at least that, I am more then happy.

But yeah, most important is his availability. Cause we already have a very injury prone Big in Maxi. Also one thing concerning his role in SAC that you didnt mention: He also was in a nasty custody battle with his ex wife right around the time of the Sabonis trade. His ex accused him of child abuse and the woke left wing "belive all women" local press in Sacrament wrote hit pieces about him and what a horrible father he is. Well, after the season he won full custody for his child, cause his ex lied. Did the press write an apology? Nope, of course not. So he sued some local media for defamation. Long story short, the franchise didnt really need him as a starter anymore, and the press was against him, so they didnt want to get caught in the middle and didnt really play him at all.

Sometimes there is more to the story why player X doesnt play anymore for team Y… and not allways did the player do something wrong!

  2. I've been saying this ever since the trade happened. Sure the Kings traded him to get off a "bad contract." Sure the Mavs took his contract on solely to get O'Max. However I refuse to believe Richaun Holmes just totally washed overnight. He's 29. He didn't fit in the Kings new system. Just a few years earlier, the only players better at rim rolling was Gobert & Joker. You put him a system that utilizes that possibly better than any other team with Luka & Kyrie… I think he will be an obvious upgrade over Powell. Holmes is a better rebounder, rim protector, and he does the little thing better than Powell. I would start him or Kleber in varying situations, and hopefully they just rotate minor injuries so I have one or the other most or all of the Season. Dwight Powell is your backup, which he'll be fine at on this smaller contract. Play Lively just enough to get a little experience, but take it slow. Holmes, Powell, Kleber, & Lively… I feel much better about that big man roster than what we had last year.

We all know Luka & Kyrie will start. I'm starting Holmes at center. I'm starting Grant Williams at the PF. Then I personally am starting Josh Green at the 3. 2-4 can knock down 3s at a high clip, which greatly spaces the floor for the 1/5 pick & roll. Green, Williams, & Holmes are all solid versatile defenders, which will help hide the fact that Luka & Kyrie aren't renowned for theirs.

Then the Mavs have a DEEP bench. Exum & Derrick Jones Jr could very well contribute imo, and they're deep on the bench. Hardy, Curry, THJ, O'Max, Kleber, & Powell will see the majority of bench mins in my opinion.

I mean just imagine teams facing Luka-Kyrie-Green-Williams-Holmes, then the tired players or second unit have to go out there and stop Hardy, Curry, THJ, O'Max, & Powell. Then if things get real bad they could put something like Exum, AJ Lawson, Jones Jr, Kleber, & Lively at 3rd string. Last year the Mavs barely had 7 players worthy of putting on the floor. They have a bright future, dont sleep on em.
