Interesting trend from the Korean Basketball League where a number of players are 80%+ from the free throw line shooting exclusively bank shots.

  1. Less embarrassing than the granny shot at least. Maybe some poor shooters in the NBA actually try this one

Hmmm. I wonder the science on this but I imagine it would actually be more efficient

Looks like mostly guards doing it. I wonder if being shorter makes the bank a better option due to the angle. I feel like it would be tougher for a 7 footer to bank it since they usually shoot more of a line drive type ft

I get it. It’s definitely easier to actually see the target you’re going for. I love banking in floaters unless I’m coming straight at the rim

    They’re using my Pop-a-Shot strategy.

  6. This shit is so cool to me lol. I love it when a group of people develop their own weird style that’s unseen anywhere else. And even better that it actually works for them.

You also have to wonder if this would mean more offensive rebounds off of misses since they would bounce out further.

As strange as it sounds now, that’s how I was taught to shoot free throws in the early 80s. Not by an AAU coach or anything, but still. Banking free throws on purpose was a real thing.

Underrated technique. I did the same in high school, but with 3 point shots. I theorized that the ball loses sufficient kinetic energy when bouncing off the backboard to cause a gentler drop towards the rim, thus decreasing a “pinball” effect when the ball contacts the rim, and making it more likely that the ball goes in. This also works for Pop-A-Shot basketball at any arcade.

I like it. When I was a kid I couldn’t hit a shot to save my life so I started saying fuck it and aimed at the square to bank everything in. If it works it works

I’ve seen most of the KBL games this past season; it’s not just free throws, they generally like to use the bank shot.

This just in: Grizzlies sending Steven Adams on an all expenses paid trip to Korea

Tim Duncan been telling you for decades. The bank is always open. It’s just a much bigger target to aim for.

  14. I was taught to aim for back rim as fatigue and no jump tend to make ft’s short. Aiming for the square is a cool strategy.

    That’s really good atmosphere.

Bank shot is very common in Asia. They teach that in middle and high school, because it’s easy to understand and effective. I learned that in 90s and my friend who’s a basketball coach in Thailand is still teaching that now. I guarantee you if you tell Asian basketball players that they don’t teach bank shots here in US they would be surprised.

Bah gawd that’s Deandre Jordan music.

When I played recreationally I always preferred bank shots and I wondered most people preferred to shoot directly.

It’s nice to see this is viable

Bank shots are legit, I used to get salty as fuck when people in pickup games said banks don’t count. Like wtf bro, might as well just remove the backboard then.

But can they do it on a cold Tuesday night in Chicago, amidst the eardrum-shattering shriek of Diar DeRozan?

My dad has been saying this for 30 years. “If shooters struggle from the FT line, why don’t they bank it? I’ve never understood that.” He’s going to feel so vindicated
