Since some people got upset about signing a Morris twin, the reason to waive/stretch McGee was a cap move first and maybe a roster spot second with a bonus option of potentially being able to do a trade where we take back more salary while keeping the non tax payer MLE (f.e. Capela for THJ would add 3M).
Also note the timing was relevant since August 31st was the deadline for getting the cap reduction applied to this season.
Morris’ salary is non-guaranteed, so for now he is just a body to fill the 15th roster spot but can be out of the door any second someone more interesting is available or a 2 for 1 trade is done.
The fact that McGee looks to be signing with the Kings further reduces the cap hit a bit

PS: Kyrie has 2M in unlikely incentives related to games played. So while for hard capping those 2M are not counted, if he does end up getting the 2M, afaik they do count to determine if we are a tax paying team. So Mavs FO likely wants to end up 2M below the tax line if possible after any in season signings/trades.
PPS: With the non-tax payer MLE the owners did a sweet trick, now as a fan there is a reason to like being below the tax line rather than just calling the team owner cheap.

Signing javale was a clown move
Change ‘cap’ to ‘crap’ in title and we agree.
