JJ Reacts To Team USA’s Loss To Lithuania

Welcome BACK to another episode of The Old Man and The Three Things with JJ Redick and Tommy Alter, where we react to the most pressing issues of the NBA today.

In this clip, we react to Team USA Basketball’s loss to Lithuania in the FIBA World Cup and give our takes on what this roster is missing and if there’s legitimate concern for them heading into the elimination round. JJ also provides context for why Brandon Ingram is struggling to find his footing in international play.

The rest of the ep, we talk about the narrative that Anthony Edwards needs to leave the Minnesota Timberwolves to play in a bigger market. Then we talk about our excitement to watch Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and The Oklahoma City Thunder this season. And finally we talk about the international play of Luka Doncic and look ahead to discuss whether the Dallas Mavericks have done enough to surround Luka and Kyrie Irving with a roster that can compete for real in the Western Conference.

  1. Just watched the game and there are a bunch of things to take away from this.

    – Lithuania shot the ball extremely well from 3, there were some lapses in coverage but you still have to hit them.
    – Lithuania completely outrebounded USA, who have no answer for bigger players like Valanciunas and Motiejunas, either having to double team or throwing an undersized guy on them, resulting in bad defensive rebounding for most of the game.
    – JJJ was in foul trouble, who is their best defensive anchor, just like in his game against Jordan.
    – Some of the players on the US team actually defended well, but then their teammates didn't take advantage of the defensive play. I saw a ton of plays where someone poked the ball loose, but then nobody picked it up.

I'd like to add that even though the USA team is undersized, they proved in the second half they can go toe to toe with Lithuania. But I have to give the Lithuanian team props for being better and pulling off a comfortable win. It showed great teamwork and they run their sets extremely well, something the US team has to grow into a little bit more. It is also nice to see, commenting on the JJ Redick video, that Ingram actually had a decent game. He had a few good defensive plays, including a highlight block and was efficient from the field. I'm confident he is going to be better every game.

  2. ā€œChampions of WHAT? The United Statesā€ yā€™all ainā€™t dissing him now that USA lost šŸ˜‚

  3. What? The population of the USA is 330,000,000. The population of Lithuania is 2,800,000. Thatā€™s the same population as ā€¦ New Mexico. And the US lost? Unfortunately these three ā€œugly Americansā€ just donā€™t know anything about the world outside the USA.

  4. the NBA players think they are too big to go play for their country now. i remember when the dream team was the pride of the country. them new players idk . what a shame. no wonder why the best players are from outside

  5. These guys are not even B level NBA players some of them are not even C level players its not there fault they would of had to play perfect every game to win

  6. Team should have asked Giannis to play. No, wait. How about Joker? No, wait. Embiid? No, wait. Sabonis? No, wait. (How about Bam or AD?)

  7. Have some pink skirts for the US Team! Itā€™s free, no money wanted. Once the skirts are worn out, we are happy to replace it.

  8. Dame, Book, Jimmy, AD & Emblid(once his citizenship goes thru), with the 2nd unit of
Ja, Spida, Tatum, KAT & JJJ

  9. The team construction isn't ideal, and many players prob declined. Obviously cade would've been better point for this team. Having a solid center who rebounds and a power forward would solve rebounding issue. This is an experiment to prepare for olympics
