Dyson Daniels and Team Australia got a major reality check

  1. After losing Jock Landale to injury Australia desperately needed big minutes from Patty Mills at PG to keep the scoreboard moving. That kept Dyson off the court more than anything.

As a NOLA Boy who moved to Australia, Australia’s coach is to blame. Really poor coaching and game time management. Dyson wasn’t even given a chance, the coach put him in for the last few minutes of all the games he played.. and he still. Made an impact.

They flat out sat him in Game 2 and only gave him 1:15 (with 3 other players mind you) on the 3rd game (in blowout, they were told to run the clock. Didn’t even give him a go.)

So I sat here and added all him 4 game stats in about 2 minutes, he finished 10 minutes with 1/2/3. They essentially played him a regular season game, in 4 games.. If you take out the Japan, game he went 9 minutes with 1/2/3 in just 3 games.

The fact is, despite only playing 3 minute per game, he averaged .3/.6/1 per minute. The fact he was able to create a Statline at all, is insane. Especially considering he wasn’t playing his role for the Pels. Dyson is defensively minded and has been put in offensive situations like the ones at this tournament since he was playing in the ABL.

These comparisons should be taken with a grain of salt, I’m basically comparing the players performance, to how their coach played them. They were all out into offensive/shooting roles, with Valanciunas also playing a defensive/rebounding role (his signature).

For reference, in BI’s first four games he averaged 15:45 minutes at 3/3.25/4. I love BI, and his Statline is arguably skewed by the stacked lineup, but poor coaching decisions is also my point. (BI’s Statline increased dramatically after the Jordan game gave him minutes off the bench, so at least Kerr’s game 3 solution wasn’t like Dyson being benched game 2.)
But regardless of this, BI only averaged .2/.2/.26 per minute in his first 4 games.

Valanciunas arguably had the best Fiba performance for our Pels. In his first 4 games he averaged 20:45 minutes with 9.75/1/14, or .47/.05/.7 per minute. He essentially played a shooter/rebounding role for the entire series, and his team funneled him the ball. That being said, despite this role Dyson still averaged more points than Valanciunas per minute.

I would like to add that this ‘per minute’ Statline I’m presenting also shows the different approaches the coaches took on incorporating the players. Valanciunas arguably got too many minutes, and this likely reduced his statline per minute.

Obviously this doesn’t factor in +/-, Valanciunas led his team to a 5 win streak after all, but the thing about Dyson that makes me so excited is in games where nothing was expected of him, he still showed out his versatility. I feel like Dyson got played by the coach bad, but he still managed to get boards and show his worth.

I expect Dyson to come back from this tournament with eagerness to prove himself. I love Dyson so much for his defensive ability and poise. The fact that he went and did his thing in limited time is telling. Excited for him to ball out in his 2nd year.

The Australian head coach is a good judge of talent.

Why would they play him? They struggled due to poor spacing, they lacked shooters. Dyson Daniels cannot shoot. Even from the FT line he’s abysmal. I think he’s an absolute flop of a player, and will see other young players on this roster go past him.
