Why the NBA should eliminate the corner 3-pointer



Corner 3-pointer is a staple of all NBA offenses (especially the Boston Celtics offense), but has it become too important? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal says it’s time to eliminate the corner 3 and keep the line at 23 feet, 9 inches so 3-pointers can be a special shot instead of something everyone is doing. Karalis and Tom Westerholm debate whether getting rid of corner 3-pointers will fix the problem or create new ones.

    The main criticism I hear from people who used to watch the NBA more before than present is that they do not want to just watch a 3 point contest.

    Without the corner 3 the Milwaukee Bucks would have threepeated and the Jazz with Gobert would have had a much better playoffs record.

    Basically teams with great paint defense would benefit tremendously.

    I'm with Tom, the game is good as it is. Removing the corner three would change the spacing and make for a less exciting product.

    2 shot for any foul in the act shooting no matter where it is this would make the driving layup a 4-point play. If it goes in. This would bring back the bigger importance of a big guy rather than a small guy shooting Beyond The Arc. I think the NBA goofed up the game by opening up a three-point play Beyond The Arc

    Interesting analysis. The 3 point uber allies works in the regular season, but it sure doesn't in the playoffs. I agree I'd like to see more inside play.
    Mazzula's statement does not bode well for the Celtics championship chances.
    Eliminating zone defense is just the worst possible idea though. Just egregiously bad

    What is the definition of basketball? The way they play at today kicking it out to the corner is not the definition of basketball I'm sorry the NBA screwed up basketball

    My opinion is that a style of play was defeated at the World Cup. 3 after 3 after 3. When the Euros would need a hoop, they post and toast. Nobody on USA could deal with it. Getting to the hoop and then kicking every time…. gets old.

    The corner 3 is the most important spot in international basketball. If u eliminate from the NBA, they can't be competitive. What they need is a 4 point shot.

    Removing the corner three-pointer will have the rest of the NBA adjusting until the next highest probability shot takes its place. At this point, when do you stop making changes to the game? Every game has its statistically efficient set of plays and changing the rules will just lead you to your next boogeyman.
