It ended with the Celtics winning the 1984 series and an epilogue that goes “but the Lakers won the next one lol”.

Man, this show was in development for YEARS to get a quick cancellation.
Unfortunate but modern tv makes it really hard to have a multiple year storyline, executives are quick to cancel shows now.

Yeah, wasn’t good. Needed more focus on the rivalries, less on Buss drama which was terrible.

Dang and right when MJ was about to start his character arc.

I liked it. Sad that it’s been cancelled but I’m not surprised.

That’s so lame. Adrian Brody as Pat Riley was excellent. MAX is ruining HBO.

I’m guess that montage at the end was a late addition, then. I was hoping to see a young Hakeem and MJ. Oh well…
The pacing of season 2 was really weird. The first season was basically Magic’s rookie year, then they blaze through four seasons worth of the NBA in the second season of the show

Let’s go the series ends with a Celtics W

I’m watching it right now…
I’m pretty sure the writers strike did it in…
Next season won’t be ready for 18 months…actors timeliness just won’t line up.
Atraktape
With the writers and actors strikes dragging on very few shows are safe.

Jeff Pearlman tweeting about worrying the show might not have a third season & imploring viewers to watch it was a tell that HBO was going to can it.

Tbf the title is “the RISE of the lakers dynasty.” With how the pacing went in s2, kinda figured it would be over with it rushing through the early 80s.
racer24ftw
Nooooo I like the show damn you HBO
IRanOutOf_Names
I’ve heard mixed things about it, do y’all recommend it? Specifically for people who don’t know basketball, as I’d be watching it with my GF who is trying to learn.

Bummer I was enjoying it

This show was imperfect. I grew a bit weary of the Jerry Buss’ off-the-court story arc and ditto with the Cookie plotline.
That being said, I’ve never seen a television show get so many design and on-court details right when it comes to basketball history. It was very clear this show was made by both real deal basketball fans and those who were incredibly committed to set design, wardrobe, and casting accuracy (50 year old Julius Erving aside). I found this series fulfilling to watch just on account of seeing how early ’80s basketball moments might look through their lens.
Moreover, while I understand the plight of the show’s real life counterparts not appreciating their portrayal, I have to admit I still had a lot of fun with it. I think I’m just so familiar with the Lakers history at this point that I was ready for something drastically different than the classic 30 for 30 type of approach, which had already been done a million times over with this rivalry.
As such, the absurdity of watching Jerry West flying off the handle like a psychopath, a Bo Burnham lookalike clotheslining Kurt Rambis, and Larry Bird handling postgame interviews in nothing but a Celtics jersey and jock strap was preposterously amazing.

I didn’t see this until after the episode but when the epilogue started giving away decades of story lines I figured there wasn’t a season 3.

That sucks, was actually a fun watch.

It’s amazing how fast Max will cancel a show.

Well that sucks, it’s an incredibly well made show
