Zeus is gonna smite this man next season

  2. Cue the hordes of dorky white dudes foaming at the mouth to lecture Giannis about his own heritage and identity in 3…2…1…

This is a very misleading title if you actually watch the video.

I am pretty sure that none of the people saying “Then go play for Nigeria” are Greek. You can be of different ethnicity and culture, and still play for your country. Surprisingly common in the Balkans. Son of the Serbian national team (Marko Pesic) played for German national basketball team, there are many examples.

Edit: People conflate ethnicity and citizenship. The point is that you don’t have to be ethnically Greek to consider Greece your country. There are many athletes in Europe (and probably wider) whose ethnicity is different from the country they represent in sports competitions. This is the norm in Europe and noone cares.

I love it but I would love it even more if he represented Nigeria internationally. Would be so huge for African basketball as a whole

Greece made it acutely obvious to him and his family that even though he was raised in Greece he wasn’t Greek. They didn’t offer him citizenship until they realized he was going to be drafted in the NBA. And even after the fact, didn’t offer it to his parents, just him and one of his brothers

    Malcolm Gladwell jumping with glee.

No shit. I’m Nigerian and I remember when I got into an argument on this sub saying that Gianni’s is Nigerian. The Greek Freak is a moniker that was handed to him and he wears it well, but we know he’s Naija thru thru

I’m almost certain I was banned from r/MkeBucks for saying what Giannis did. 🙃

There really is nothing to say other than to respect his own view of his identity and the man he is and do so unconditionally because that is ultimately very personal.

lol. Redditors still gonna question this 🤣🤣
There was a discussion here couple of weeks ago and you would get heavily downvoted and called every name in the book if you even insinuate that Giannis is Nigerian. Blood(ethnicity)ain’t water after all 🤷

Bummer cause Nigerian Freak doesn’t even rhyme

Malcolm gladwell just got the biggest boner right now

  16. The real mindfuck is when you go live in your parents’ home country and realize you don’t feel like you belong in that culture either.

Ah. Say goodbye to the Greek Freak and say hello to the Nigerian…Librarian?

  18. What’s weird is seeing bozos on Twitter saying he’s a fake African because he plays for Greece

  19. thebigmanhastherock

I can’t blame him considering how Greece didn’t treat him like a Greek. I think he had the experience many first generation immigrants have.

  20. Holiday-Somewhere-96

I’m genuinely tired of this being a topic off discussion

  21. Sparda204920

Greece is known to have a very racist culture.
