NBA Team Rankings: Is Donovan Mitchell good enough to lead Cavaliers to Finals? | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf continues his ranking of the top 20 teams in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 season with No. 13, the Cleveland Cavaliers. With Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland in their second season together leading the back court, the Cavs should take the next step in competing for the Eastern Conference finals.

  1. Mailbag – Hi jason great show. What are your thoughts on seeding. For example if the nuggets or warriors finish with the 5-6 seed in the regular season will you still have them as title favourites based off previous success or are they bumped down into a contender tier

  2. Hi Jason, I know that's not you area of expertise, but I would like to hear your bb fantasy analysis before start of season. Maybe to take one week to address minutes splits and what you expect from top 100 players in fantasy.

  3. 100% agree w cavs roster construction issues. when they traded for donovan mitchell i said (as currently constructed) they were gonna be like jazz east. win a bunch of reg szn games off the strength of a grerat defense but flame out bad in the playoffs. – but this goes back to the jalen v ja convo:

if the cavs have this big flaw how can you give brunson so much credit for beating them. the wolves team ja beat had similar playoff upside as this cavs team – not a lot

  4. Dame take is completely bogus.. correct me if I'm wrong, don't teams that draft players have the ability to give more money (possibly longer terms as well) when extending players? So you're saying that Dame has the right to get that team deal but then demand a trade to where he wants even if they don't have a good trade package to compensate? Load of bs.. there's a CBA for a reason and in a league that is far removed from the NFL and is ability to cut players and the money they get I'm even more dumbfounded by this take. Dame isn't even a top 5 player in the league, he doesn't play both sides of the ball. He could have signed a shorter term deal(s), he could have asked quietly for a trade and let the team get the best deal if he wanted out.. this idea that players can basically collude and force their way into whatever team they want further breaks whatevee competitive balance the league might have and gives ppl even less of a reason to watch.. love bball but hate how the NBA continues to let this nonsense slowly kill the brand..

  5. Mailbag ?: If you could choose to have 1 rule added to NBA gameplay and 1 rule removed… what would your two rules be?

  6. Mailbag question: Jason. What should the NBA do to make the All-Star weekend more relevant? The dunk contest is lackluster and the All-Star game is basically a giant team practice. My opinion is that the league should shorten the season so the players aren’t walking on egg shells regarding injuries for the All-Star game. I think they should scrap the dunk contest for a king of the court competition. Sizing would be an issue but the NBA has money to figure out equal match-ups. Thanks for the show.

  7. Mailbag question:

Who do you see winning the title this year? Do you think the Boston Celtics have a chance to make it out the East and who would be their opponent?

  8. I do not understand the point with shares of the profit with Lillard. Every employe in the world could say the same, if you are making sandwiches you are getting part of the revenue, they will not pay you because they care about where you are going to sleep and what are you going to eat. You will get the same money at any other sandwich shop. It is not like Damian Lillard wrote Harry Potter and created something out of nothing.

  9. say to this? I tend to disagree because I think Steph Curry is the most skilled player in the league. Kyrie might have the best handle, but there have been other ball handlers at least comparable to him in history. However no one can even TOUCH Curry in terms of volume pull-up 3 point shooting PLUS he might have top 3 handles in the league… Thoughts?

  10. Mailbag question: You've remarked many times about defenses that have a defensively gifted big as the fulcrum, is it possible to have a top 5 defense with a wing defender as the fulcrum?

Side note: Your pod is legendary and I base some of the things we do on ours on how you structure things. Keep up the great work!

  11. Cavs core 4 and Caris STILL and a net positive rating against the Knicks. Wrong again, buddy

  12. How can "2 small guards" be a problem, when the Cavs STILL were the best defensive team in the playoffs? How can shooting not be the biggest problem, when they had the worst offense in the playoffs? How can the bench not be the problem, but the Cavs Core Four plus Caris had a staunchly positive net rating against the Knicks? Terrible shooting allowed Knicks to pack the paint. That destroyed Garland and Mitchell's game, and caused Allen to be out of rebounding position every time. And there was nobody to kick our, and the bench was awful:meaning there were no adjustments to be made by JB.. You're full of contradictions, and shit. Still a great guy and I mean all of this with love, but their problems were shooting, depth, and age. Nothing else

  13. Mailbag: except for the ABA ball, FIBA was much better to watch. So many fewer fouls, although I haven’t seen the per-game stats to back up subjective observation.

Why doesn’t the NBA adjust foul criteria to let the players play? Fouls used to be called when a defender prevented a basket by illegitimate means. Now, a foul is almost an entitlement for excuse-me contact.

  14. Mail bag question: I’m curious what your thoughts are on the new mid-season tournament?

    Love the pod!
