[Greg Finberg] October 23rd, one month from today, is the deadline for the Wizards and F Deni Avdija to agree on a contract extension. If no agreement is reached, Avdija will become a restricted free agent in July. What’s your best offer for Avdija?

By the way, If I were Deni, I would bet on myself.

He wouldn’t get much of a great contract until October (long-term, but low price compared to what he can really do).

If he shows he can be more consistent and with improve shooting, then his value will raise quite a lot. At the worst case (if he remains the same), I bet teams will still give him a chance but with lower salary.

I don’t know, I think that if he truly believes in himself, he can bet on it.

Though he can play it safe and just get a contract for 2-3 years, but at low value.

I doubt the Wizards will let him go for free.

I’d give Deni a deal similar to Herb Jones and Jared Vanderbilt somewhere in that 4/48M-4/54M range (maybe 4/60 if we end up not using our MLE this year which is looking pretty likely, same way indiana extended Myles turner and frontloaded some of the deal in the first year(s) due to having the cap space to do it)

If he improves his offensive game and can shoot near league average or just even better than what he is now the contract will instantly become a steal.

If he doesn’t improve much hes at a fair value for a guy who’s a great defender and one of the better rebounding forwards in the league.

Maybe im being a little delusional but if Advija was a bit more polished offensively and was shooting 3s around 34-35% he coulda been a guy making 17-20M+ on his next deal the question marks still being there this many years later kinda keeps him in that around MLE money (I know the difference isn’t that huge between the non tax payer MLE and the 17-20M but still a decent chunk of change not have for a player of his caliber.)

He definitely should bet on himself. Especially if his defense stays on the trajectory it’s on
