NBA Team Rankings: Why Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are a championship duo | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf continues his ranking of the top 20 teams in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 season with No. 11, the Dallas Mavericks. After trading for Kyrie Irving last year to team up with Luka Doncic, the Mavericks missed the playoffs in disappointing fashion. Going into their second year together, and after the Mavs shook up the rest of their roster, this team is poised to make a run in the Western Conference.

  1. Mailbag question: How much does being involved in an injury change how you play? Things that come to mind is charge setting, blindside screens, undercutting on close outs, mid air contests. Thinking about the player that made the impact on nick Chubb. I’m sure there is some internal warfare anytime a player performs those things on a court after they were involved in an injury. Do players continue to close out as hard, set as many screens, take as many charges etc.

  2. Mavs are lower than Okc?
Cmon man,i respect young talent of Okc but its you,who preach bout "proven teams and players".
If Mavs didnt want to tank last 2games,they finish with same record as Okc.
But i understand,if you not a fan,you cant understand how little luck we had last year.
Everything that could go wrong went wrong

  3. Mailbag question: a lot of people say Kyrie Irving is the "most skilled player" in the NBA. What do you say to this? I tend to disagree because I think Steph Curry is the most skilled player in the league. Kyrie might have the best handle, but there have been other ball handlers at least comparable to him in history. However no one can even TOUCH Curry in terms of volume pull-up 3 point shooting PLUS he might have top 3 handles in the league… Thoughts?

  4. Mailbag question. If you had the power of the commissioner would you change anything specific in the NBA?

  5. Really interesting breakdown of an essentially new Mavs team. Jeez, the west is ridiculous. The Nuggets/Mavs parallel is a good one, though I think what the Nuggets proved is that a team can be middle of the pack defensively during an increasingly less important regular season but become a top defense during the playoffs. Nuggets were #3 defensively among all playoff teams and had a defensive rating that would have been #2 in the regular season. To assess the Mavs playoff chances I think you'd have to explain how the Nuggets made that leap and assess whether Dallas has the personnel to make a similar leap.

  6. Why Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are a championship duo
This would be true if one of them played defense
    No defense = no championships

  7. Mailbag: where do you rank harden all time? More so interested in how you evaluate such a great RS player in his prime and poor playoff performer.
He's also one of the few great scorers and playmakers at his level

  8. Grant had a lot of playing time with Cs, he played 26 min per game last year. They needed him to pan out, thats a spot where they were thin before acquiring KP. He had few and far between good games. At times he really killed Cs when on the floor. Theres a lot of mental lapses with him that made Brad crazy, he kind of worked a bit better with Eme, but again reverted to his old self with Mizzula .
They tried playing him but it was just really bad, gave him all the chances, cause they needed that position.
What ever shooting % he has hes a negative BPM player, last year -1.1, his PER is 9, compared to league avg of 15, TOV% is over 14%, compared to league avg of 12
To put it in simple words, he turns the ball over too much, hes not efficient , hes overall negative impact on a team. Which is hard to understand looking at his shooting %
Hes an infuriating player, plus undersized
Plus I watched a lot of Cs basketball for years – I just didnt want to watch him in green any more (yes he had a great game in playoff a year a go but he had 60 bad games). Im mostly pissed at him cause I had high hopes, I saw something that isnt there, a shooter, passer, strong guy, decent post-up player.
I wasnt happy when Mavs gave him all that money.

  9. Their 3rd best team is Grant Williams. Intriguing duo but the team isnt doing shit lmao

  10. Giannis and Luka… thats my dream. Just for a season or couple of games at least… 😀

  11. Do you even know what you're talking about? You keep re-addressing the fact that you believe in Luka and Kyrie and at the same time saying D'Aaron Fox and Sabonis can't do what they do when they have already proven they can be an offensive juggernaut. Who won Clutch player award last year? Who lead the league in double doubles last year? What if Damion Mitchell works on his offensive game and be elite on both ends? The truth is, you think every team that doesn't structure a rosters like a Lebron team wouldn't be able to win the championship.

  12. Mailbag: What team do you think has the most underrated front office in the league? Just a team who you think is really well run but doesn’t get talked about enough. Huge fan of the show and you’ve taught me so much about the game thank you!!

  13. I have zero trust in Kyrie's on court impact, let alone off court problems. Having them at #11 is a borderline hot take.

  14. I have no idea if he's confusing Max Kleber with someone else, which i doubt since there's nobody who can dribble that he can possibly confuse him with in these last couple of years of historical dribble deficient lineups but MAXI KLEBER can not dribble to save his life.

He's been elite defensively when healthy, and he had that one season where he was elite from three(on pretty low volume). He was a legit starter that year regardless of his incredible dribble deficient and deer in headlight decision making. Today though? Multiple injuries and a couple of years later? If he's in the rotation, Dallas are a play-in team.

If Dallas wanna go from play-in to contender. They need to see that THJ and Kleber should absolutely not be Dallas Mavericks next year and smartly fool team/s to take them in a trade. And not hesitating in using their picks + Hardy for a center.
