Part of Ayton's lower trade value is on the Suns and how they handled the whole situation. They sold low which is why they deserve that criticism
I don’t think ayton is going to ever going to earn his contract. He’s just above average nothing really special. He has no drive to be the best.
Trade is an A+. Suns were always trading Ayton after Beal trade. Thus, this trade is just part of that trade.

I gave it a D+ at the time. After looking at the stats of it, I think it grades out as a B. They got two guys who played better than Ayton last year, and a guy who could be a part of a future trade (Little). Maybe the Suns could have gotten more, but other teams have access to the same advanced stats I do, and most say that Ayton was nowhere near a max contract player.
It will take a while to sink in how disastrous this offseason was for the Suns. And how mismanaged: Turns out all along that Phoenix held the young player Portland wanted to headline its trade haul: Not Herro, not OG, but Deandre Ayton—a skilled center to pair with their guards. This should have given Suns the trump card over all contenders to land Dame…except they took themselves out of the running months ago by dealing for Bradley Beal, a far inferior supermax player. Why the rush?
Ofc, it’s quite possible Suns simply lacked the additional assets to make a Ayton/CP3 for Dame/Nurkic swap work for Portland. Even the Bucks had more picks/swaps to offer. If that’s the case, fine—make the Beal trade with Wizards and canvass the league for Ayton offers. What’s unforgivable is agreeing to an Ayton deal that facilitates another contender getting Dame, which in turn gave another contender Jrue Holiday. Suddenly, both the Bucks and Celtics have Big Threes (Fours counting KP/Lopez) that can compete with the firepower of KD/Booker/Beal—and all thanks to Phoenix stepping in to be the third team in the Dame deal.
A top-heavy superteam that actively helps other GMs form top-heavy superteams is bad enough—Sun’s chances of winning the 2024 title are appreciably lower post-Dame/Jrue deals. What’s worse is that Suns are uniquely handicapped in improving beyond this season. If they fall short in the playoffs, Suns can’t shake things up like Bucks/Celtics did by swapping in Dame for Jrue or Jrue for Brogdon/Smart. Because they let Bradley Beal keep his no-trade clause from the Wizards!!!
I.e., either this core wins as assembled, or the next big move Suns make is shipping out Booker/Durant to restock draft picks for the rebuild. 🤦🏻♂️

I love D.A. However we are getting the same outcome for half the pay. D.A. Wanted to be a high power offense player, we need a high power defense player. With all this offensive star power there was no room for D.A. To flourish
