[Weiss] The Celtics have opened extension talks with Pritchard but still have a gap to close to reach an agreement, according to sources briefed on the negotiations.

There’s also a lot of Malcolm Brogdon stuff if anyone wants to read it

If they get a long term team friendly deal that would be great. It’s huge that we have Hauser on $2M the next two years since the books are getting expensive.

    >gap to close

What gap? He’s worth maybe 3-5 mil a year. He’s an undersized shooting guard which is the least valuable position in the league and he’s not like a star or future star level guy at that position either.

If he was super dominant he’d probably get like 20 mil a year at most just because of the positional value.

Lol PP way too high on himself. You gotta respect that cause you gotta believe in yourself, but there’s no way he’s worth much at all.

Score-first, undersized guards are a dime a dozen

Why are we trying to extend him right now? See how he does in this role and talk about it in the summer. He’s not important enough to commit future money to at this point.

I don’t know why he’d want to get far in those talks. It doesn’t make sense for the Celtics to give him a big role and it makes sense he’d want to get that bigger role somewhere (even though it’ll always be tough with his size)

It might be smart to lock him up, even if the number seems high, because we’re currently tapped out on tradeable contracts for salary matching.

Can’t move the Jays, KP, or Jrue. Horford is essential to the front court and White is essential to the backcourt.

If/when another mid-sized contract becomes available for trade we need someone making a decent chunk of money that’s moveable. Pritchard will see substantial time this year and he’s got an opportunity to solidly himself as a real rotation player. The more value he builds on the court, the more he brings back in a trade eventually.

Pritchard: “Bro like every extension you’ve done besides the Jays have been traded away after signing it”

I think anything <$10m is probably fine – if he shows out this year in an expanded role this could be a huge long-term value. This negotiation seems to be in line with how the organization handled Brown/Smart/Rob extensions, locking in players to a longer deal on team-friendly terms at the start of a “prove-it” year

I don’t think we extend him because we can avoid the second apron next season if we let him walk

    Please trade him.

Any player who asks to be traded off a team competing for a championship or shoots it every time he touches the ball, while being the fifth option, is better off somewhere else.

He has Terry Rozier 18-19 energy without having Rozier’s ability.

Team’s probably offering like $10M over 3 years lol.

F yeah, I love our PP.

Partly because im a short white guy, and I always loved the short point guard in the nba. The solid PG who can play his role and help run a team. Whether its the starter or a bench guy. Like Celtics legends Marcus Banks, Jiri Welsh, or like NBA great Dan Dickau. Or the point god CP3. I love these players.

Sign PP to an extension baby, cant wait to see PP play 82 games a year.

We can probably use the fact that he didn’t play much last year as leverage in signing him, and if we do sign him to a longterm contract before the season begins then it will likely end up being a steal as he was legitimately a good role player in 2022 and only didn’t play last year because the rotation ahead of him was Smart, White, and Brogdon

  14. DocumentEarly5421

If we sign him now before any breakout happens, that could be a steal of a deal. 4/32, team option on the 4th. It’s an overpay for what he’s so far accomplished, but I think he’s a better player than 8M a year, just been buried behind really good guards his whole career.

If he doesn’t live up to 8M a year, which isn’t the highest bar, that’s still good salary filler in a trade ala Theis.

PP minutes are going to stay the same or go down. No idea why he would ever sign an extension when he is looking at close to 5 million a year. Of course if Celtics are offering mid level type money 10 million a year for 4 years I would jump on it.

  16. planj07

I like Pritchard but he really values himself highly for someone who hasn’t really even carved out a significant rotational role until now.

It is called betting on yourself. Mostly risky (ex. Grant Williams), but it can do wonders for PP as far as his career is concerned.
