Wembanyama’s agent in July: “People are wrong. We’re not focused at all on weights. I don’t want to put weight on his body. We’re going to fight to not put weight on his body.” Less than 3 months later, Wemby says he has gained 10 to 15 lbs.

  1. They touch on that in the recent article about his new training regime

    >For years, Wembanyama has undergone a strict diet, training and stretching regimen meant to mitigate [increased risk for foot problems].

    >To help him in San Antonio, the Spurs have added Wembanyama’s longtime French strength coach, Guillaume Alquier, to the team’s full-time staff.

    >Wembanyama says he has benefited from working with a cutting-edge NBA medical staff as well.

    >“I learned as much about my body in these past three months than I have in the past five years,” Wembanyama said. “We can work smarter, because we know a lot more.”

I don’t know what weight is best for his body but I sure hope his agent isn’t the one making the call on what Wemby’s playing weight will be.

  3. Pumpoozle

People who want him to gain weight are absolutely bonkers. He needs to keep his feet alive.

It’s that dang Tex-Mex and churros!

/s in case it isn’t obvious

sounds like a natural amount of weight for a 19 year old 7’5 man to gain. you’re overthinking it. They’re just saying they’re not going on a immediate bulk.

  6. paxusromanus811

Well yes just because he gained weight doesn’t mean it was their focus.

If you followed him and his camp over the last year, everything about this guy has been meticulously planned for years. One of the reasons he’s so thin is because they’ve actively avoided things that could add excess weight until they were sure he was done growing .

Towards the end of the year they said that really for the first time he was going to start actively doing strength training but combined with, as the article mentioned, him and his long -term trainer working with the Spurs and their top of the line development staff has just inevitably caused him to put on some strength naturally.

He’s not going to try to bulk up which was the whole point of the quote from his agent, that’s never going to be something you see him or the Spurs push on him. It just wouldn’t benefit his game or his body type. At the same time, of course she’s going to naturally put on some strength.

  7. > I don’t want to put weight on his body.

    Good luck in San Antonio.

  8. The dude is 19 years old and 7’4′. He is going to gain some weight over the next few years regardless of what he does. Look at Giannis when he was 19 vs now. Even look at a guy like KD who is still a skinny dude, but was significantly skinnier at 19.

He’s still a teenager. He’s gonna gain weight. I am a big fan of his trainers emphasizing flexibility and calisthenics to strength his ligaments though

After the Kawhi episode the Spurs training staff has been looking to regain trust from their players and get some positive PR imo

Gaining functional strength isn’t the same as becoming “muscular”. He needed/needs to add functional strength to be able to deal with the rigors of professional basketball and the way he’s going to be defended. Good to see him do so and I’m sure he’ll gain more just by being in a NBA training/fitness program.

  12. jaywalker_69

He gained 15 pounds in 3 months as a guy who’s 7’3…that’s nothing

  13. This makes a ton of sense.

    1) He’s going to passively gain weight as he matures.

    2) The game is less physical now, he’s not going to bang / get banged down low (pause).

  14. SkepticalHippo93

I don’t want to put weight on my body either, or focus on weights. I’ve also added about 10 pounds in 3 months. Is he hitting Halloween candy early, and a healthy diet of Dr Pepper also?

  15. ProfessorTicklebutts

Jesus the gotcha culture of this sub is fucking out of control.

  16. Crafty_Substance_954

So you’re saying Wemby isn’t going to be a 7 foot Sam Sulek?

  17. RemoveHuman

Everyone making too much of these quotes. The goal is probably to slowly build a normal amount of mass. Not just lift 2x a day with protein shakes. This is probably the normal nba routine that all players naturally go through.

  18. They’re right tho. Just automatically thinking ‘bulk up’ isn’t always easy and if you don’t do it right you’ll create an imbalance. I’m convinced that’s what happened to AD. He didnt bulk properly and became top heavy = lower extremity injuries

  19. 10-15 lbs is normal, since he was way too skinny. He’s just going to be skinny strong like KD. But Wemby is even bigger. Slenderman

  20. High_IQ_is_Torture

Good thing you are an agent not a trainer.

  21. Imho his circle of “friends” is dangerous for him.

He is literally a skeleton and if you are a bit into nutrition / strength etc you know his recovery time is ass at that weight.

His training routine looks like he bought into the snake oil and i hope the Spurs have enough balls to tell him to grow up.

  22. xMozartsGhostx

that Popeyes chicken really puts on those extra pounds

  23. Wemby’s agent doesn’t sound like he’s ever been an agent for an NBA player before.
