I pretty much guarantee Harden could get a long term contract from us for ~$30 mil/year even after this season if he plays well, but he can’t get a long term max from anybody like he wants. There is not going to be that kind of market for Harden next season no matter what he does this year.
If the Clippers trade for him they will only be bidding against themselves. It’s exactly the same situation he has here. There is no team that is giving Harden a max in free agency so why would the team that has his bird rights offer him that much? There is no incentive to do that even if he surprisingly helps deliver a championship to one of these teams. He’s just too old to commit that kind of money to.
