*In addition to offering Charania more than $600,000 a year — significantly more than the paper’s top reporters make — the Times allowed him to take on the side deals with both Stadium and FanDuel. (His total compensation from various sources is now well into seven figures; neither Charania nor the Times would discuss his pay.)*

Interesting profile on Shams and what his life is like. Another quote:

*Charania drinks only two cups a day but exudes caffeination; his legs shook constantly under the table, and I lost track of how often he reached for his phone, which had 125 unheard voice-mails, 72,443 unread emails, and an unceasing stream of texts, many of which he responded to as they came in. He averages 18 hours of screen time a day and was proud of how far that number had dipped on a recent vacation to Portugal with his family, even if he had continued tweeting minor news — “Skal Labissiere has agreed to a partially guaranteed one-year deal with the Sacramento Kings” — throughout the weeklong trip. “I prefer the poolside sit-and-do-nothing vacation, so I can still be on my phone as constant as I wanna be,” Charania said. “But did it get to, like, 14 hours? Yes. Did it get to, like, 12 or 13 hours some days? Yes. I think that’s a win.”*

seeing how influential Charania is, and how many followers he has. these betting apps are def giving him 2-5m a year just to advertise betting.

    this dude must be swimming

  2. Own-Marsupial-4448

Damn!!! Dude making vet minimums lol!!

  3. pskill43

Honestly I thought guys like him and Woj makes way more than those numbers

  4. luke_workin

    > He has never known reporting without iPhones and DMs and is far more famous for his constant tweeting than for any story he has ever published, in part because his writing is so notoriously clunky that the sports website Defector named an annual award for inscrutable prose after him.

    lmao

  5. copaseticepiplectic

if i was him id be retiring within a year, his life sucks

  6. lecadet

18 hour screen time sounds like hell

What does that do to your brain lol

  7. ProfessorTicklebutts

Why the fuck is this here? Who cares?

  8. 0dias_Chrysalis

Horrible at writing but doesn’t really matter when he’s the guy who tells me Damian Lillard is a Buck first

  9. thisisbyrdman

Legitimately don’t understand why newspapers are paying $600000 for someone to report press releases 45 seconds before they’re released. He and Woj are all time grifters for convincing people that what they do is both important and irreplaceable.

I don’t understand the insane value of these guys.

50% of time they are tweeting stuff slightly before the teams officially announce.

the other times are a mix of bs to bs from agents and bs from teams.

  11. RosaReilly

The NBA should really bring this stuff in-house. There’s no need for there to be two guys making a fortune whose main job is tweeting league and trade announcements.

There is no way a life like this is healthy or sustainable. Being an insomniac my entire adult life has been miserable, i’m fucking constantly tired. And i can’t even get to sleep without a medicine that keeps me groggy through much of the day.

  13. ElliottP1707

Seems kind of unethical that he has deals with betting companies when his tweets can massively swing the odds in bets. Look at how him and Woj contradicting each other on the draft order swung voting odds on Scott or Brandon Miller wildly over draft week.

  14. you guys love these workaholic stories dont ya?

  15. Malt529

So how much does Shams sources get paid for divulging their info

  16. SYSTEMcole

That 5 minutes between Shams telling me player X is going to team Y and an actual reporter of value telling me the details of the trade are definitely worth those millions.

  17. gochuuuu

He also has kay adams drooling over his nutsack which seems nice

  18. RyanBlackburn

My question his how does Shams get his information and what is he giving his sources in return?

  19. TruthAccomplished313

He’s my WhatsApp uncles if they were NBA reporting machines instead of BJP ones

  20. RokkintheKasbah

God I hate this clown. He’s the fucking worst.

  21. Latter-News-2851

Lol congrats to Shams on becoming so successful but that life sounds fucking miserable.

  22. EdoubleYT

So how does it work, does Woj and Shams send kickbacks to sources inside the office to break news?

  23. lycosid

Dude absolutely deserves it and I could not replicate his lifestyle for even one year, no matter what they paid me.

  24. Fit_MedManiac

18 hours of screentime is crazy, I feel disgusting the days I have over 6 hours

  25. GiannisisMVP

Bouncing leg underneath the table don’t people just do that? I basically have zero caffeine intake and that happens constantly when I’m focusing on something.

  26. Enterprise90

Woj going back and deleting that tweet praising Shams as a promising young reporter is probably one of the most genuinely petty things I’ve ever read.

  27. onamonapizza

Surprised Woj didn’t report this first and more accurately.
