Key Over Reactions from the Exhibition game:
1) Tyrese Proctor Dazzles.
Yes that's right! Tyrese coming to form starting the game shooting 5 for 6 and finishing 5 for 8. Proctor not just looked the part but looked like a sure fire lottery pick. His shooting is getting back to the form he had while playing for the Australian Men's National Team at age 17. This is the Proctor we were hoping to see last year, albeit a year late, but an upgraded version no doubt!
2) May the Horns Offense Rest In Peace.
The staple of Coach K's offense for the past 40+ years may be officially dead & deceased. Jon Scheyer ran exclusively a 5 man out offense the entire game. Given all the interviews from Jon himself and the players, I think this is the new regime from here on out.
My personal opinion, it's also the death of title contention. I'll elaborate more on this later….
3) Frontcourt continues to look very underwhelming since the Blue/White game.
This was my biggest concern for Duke reaching a Final 4. Now I'm worried for them reaching the Elite 8. Double hip Flip did not show he was comfortable at the 5. He certainly didn't rebound to the level he did last year at the 4 and this opponent was drastically undersized, yet here is the block disparity: Duke 2 blocks, UNC Pembroke 6. Mark got blocked on multiple occasions. Can't imagine how badly we will get bullied in the post by Miami, UNC, or NC State in ACC play and this tough non-conference schedule is certainly going to reveal how viable this 5 man out strategy will be for March/April. Yes Duke was hot from 3, but this was an inferior defensive team overall. Don't get me wrong, still expect a fun and competitive season!
4) Jon Scheyer received Coach K privilege.
And I hope it continues!!! Love it when the officiating comes flowing in our favor. What a drastic difference from last year. Cross your fingers we keep this same mojo. For reference, UNC Pembroke was whistled for a whopping 30 fouls.
5) Duke will live and die by the 3 this year.
Duke impressed in this exhibition, but that should be expected. What worries me is this 5-man out offense can be easily guarded against by a competent defensive team. This isn't the NBA where the court is spread and the rules favor spacing. It's college where the court is condensed and the rules favor penetration given the rule change to charging calls. It's better to get your 3 points from an And-1 while simultaneously putting your opponent to the bench. Just my opinion….
6) Christian Reeves has been outcasted from The Brotherhood.
No not really…. But given he has impressed in scrimmage videos and the Blue/White scrimmage, does anyone find it odd he was THE ONLY Duke player to not get minutes? Thats right, every other bench player saw action. Maybe something may turn up as to why (Jon hates Christians *cough*), but after watching Ryan Young stink it up I left this exhibition thinking Reeves should take all of his minutes and we can let Ryan focus solely on his MBA degree & Podcasting. Surely Jon realizes Reeves is his missing piece to reinforce a post presence….. Right???? Given the Horns Offense has been trashed I have my doubts.
