> Pacers All-Star engine Tyrese Haliburton is looking forward to a level playing field.
> “**It’s something for the young teams to compete, especially early in the year,**” Haliburton told Yahoo Sports. “Younger teams and the teams that are expected to be worse, the playoffs, over 82 games, by the end of the year, you know, you’re not making the playoffs. Whereas with the in-season tournament, everybody has an opportunity to win. If you get hot early, you really have a chance.”
>Haliburton, though, has one critique of the new format.
>“**I think the greatest incentive for everybody to do it would be an automatic playoff bid,” he said. “If it was a playoff spot, I think everyone would take it very, very serious, right?** I think the older teams would take it serious. But then it might … what would [the winning team] do then?”
>Here, Haliburton admitted the challenges of such an award.
>**“I don’t know how you’d necessarily do it, that’s really hard to do,**” Haliburton said. “By the end of the year, if the oldest team won, they’d be like, ‘We’re not playing for real. We’re the eight seed, we don’t care, we’re in.’ That’d be the only bad effect.
>“But I like that they’re experimenting with things. Who knows what it will look like five years from now?”

I like the idea of automatic home court in the first round *if* you make it to the playoffs.
Give the winner a play-in spot!
They should let the winner get 1 guaranteed win of their choice that can be used in the regular season or playoffs. Shit would be hilarious
The games count towards the regular season right?
FA cup winner gets an automatic Europa qualification iirc. It’s a nice incentive in the Prem.
Fuck it
Tournament winner gets the number one seed in the entire NBA
Automatic playoff berth is ridiculous.
But it is giving an automatic playoff bid. Except it’s the playoff for the play in cup. And instead of playoff they call it quarterfinals for the play in tournament
Winner does not get automatic bid to the playoffs. But if the winner do make the playoffs they should be getting automatic home court advantage throughout every series they play.
If they get a guaranteed spot, they will not take the rest of the regular season seriously.
It should be an automatic tiebreaker
>If you get hot early, you really have a chance
Not really, the 4 group games are spread out over 3.5 weeks and realistically you need to go 3-1 or 4-0 to even make the top 8 to get hot and win 3 in a row.
Let the winner force a trade with another team 😈
Winner gets to kiss Adam Silver.
This is just a horrible idea I’m sorry lol
He’s not wrong that it would. But it also gives a team an out to do shit the rest of the year. The NBA rather the sustained viewership than the few games.
Like if the Heat won, Jimmys probably playing like 10 games all year
C’mon do you not see the big flaw with this? If a team doesn’t really care about home court advantage and they win the tournament they will be resting their players as much as possible for the remainder of the regular season
What about extra wins added to their overall record? So if they win the tournament, they get an extra 3 wins. This wouldn’t be their historic record, but would just be to effect how they seed in the playoffs
I think the winner should get 3 wins
Winner gets Rest Your Stars coupons
Tournament winner gets to pick their first round opponent
I hate this idea. It devalues the idea of having a regular season.
Sports is about the better teams winning over the season and then playoffs based on that regular season.
Giving some games some extra prize is like some reality game show shit where you skip rounds or some bullshit (which is fine for reality gameshows) but not for merit based sports. Whats next all star MVP wins their team immunity from elimination for one playoff series?
Money in the Bank
If you win in season tournament you automatically play the champ And if you win it counts as a ring
Because we need teams to take the regular season even less seriously…
Better idea. The winner gets Jokic
Winning the tourny should add 5 Ws to the regular season standing. Could push a playin team to a guaranteed spot or a 3 seed up to the 1 seed. A fluke team wouldn’t end up in the playoffs without enough regular season wins to back it up and a good team is still incentivized to win the games so they can get some more rest before the post season starts
I think an extra first round pick at the end of the lottery might be a good incentive. But I don’t like the idea of a guaranteed playoff or play-in berth, because then the tourney winner could essentially coast for the last four months.
Winner should get the 31st pick in the draft
Makes the rest of the season MUCH more boring for that team’s fans, and honestly everyone.
That would actually be awesome.
Winner of the tournament gets AT WORST a play-in spot
How about a draft boost?
Hear me out: In-season tournament winner gets to flip home court advantage in ONE playoff series in their favor. This would be a huge and coveted benefit if you are a lower seed in the playoffs
They are regular season games with a chance at $500k per player… what are people talking about?
This is not for the old teams that can crush a 7 game series, it is a one and done tourney where everyone has a chance.
Honestly, make the first round of the draft 31 picks and make the reward the 5th overall pick. It’s high enough that a good team could really benefit from it without getting a player like Wemby. Fifth overall seems like that sweet spot where you can probably get a really good role player for a contender without guaranteeing a “rich get richer” situation.
“That’d be the only bad effect”.
Yeah effectively only having a 29 team league for the regular season would be a pretty bad effect.
Just give the winner like +3 wins when computing playoff seeding, and maybe runner up +1. Would be simple to implement and make people care without warping the whole season.
