[Landon Thomas] Luka Dončić: “A lot of positive things to look at. I think what lost us the game was my turnovers and defensive rebounds. I think if this was last year, we would’ve lost by 30. I think there’s a lot of positive things to look at and we can all learn from it.”

My concern with Luka is that he seemingly knows what all the issues are but he can’t commit to fixing them.

At some point he will always revert back to playing iso-ball and jacking up a bunch of bad shots/complaining to the refs instead of getting back on defense/sloppy ball handling/bad body language.

This guy could easily end up as a top 5 player of all time if he can just get past that cycle of being unbelievable and then crashing down with bad habits.

  2. 100% agree, same way i see tonight’s game. Honestly better that we lost this way so they can work on the weak spots but still keep the optimism. Had we won, I guess some stuff would go unnoticed with the hype of the win and a 5-0 start. We’re still 4-1, 80%

Good, honest response. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that this team, for all the improvements its gotten this offseason, is still a work in progress. Just six months ago they were absolutely dead in the water, with hideous contracts, malcontents and a single FRP to their name that they nearly missed out on even having. The Mavs are in such a better place compared to last year.

Nico did a marvelous job snagging quality pieces up but the job’s not done. They need time to gel together; you don’t reach cohesion like Denver’s got within a few games, probably not even in a single season.

The rebound situation definitely needs work. Was extremely frustrating to see the ball go back into Nugget hands like 75% of the time (it felt like) for second- or third-chance points.

Rebounding effort seemed low to me. Something Tyson Chandler might want to work on with Lively. (Not that it’s on him; it was everybody. Just that he’s the one gonna be spending the most time around the rim.)

Next 3 games really show what kind of team Mavericks are.

I really hope they won’t flop against Charlotte, Orlando (back to back) and Toronto. Those games really show Mavs’ character and if we can come together as a team.

All are games we are capable of winning if we stay locked in and keep improving.
