Government subsidies for sports arenas are a disaster for society

Cant see the story, whats this about?

That’s irritating, especially since Abe Pollin and the city did a good job dividing costs when the arena was opened 25 years ago.
The city paid for the land, expanding the Galleria Place Metro, and giving Pollin favorable lease terms to build on the land, while Pollin paid for the arena itself.

It’s so annoying that their attitude toward this is “give us $600m or we’re taking our ball and going home.” Remember the report that they were considering moving the Wizards and Capitals to NoVa? This comes at a time when we seemingly don’t have enough budget to fund public services and new measures like free bus fare for District residents are being shelved. On the other hand, DC seemingly has infinite money to fund overtime for cops and subsidize sports arenas. It’s disappointing.

I guess the Henny Lofts aren’t bringing in the money Ted hoped they would
