The key: They haven’t played any decent teams besides the Nuggets
Mavs are winning games they would have lost a year ago. Better rebounding, but they also have not played top tier teams. Still need to improve Defense, that will determine success in playoffs.
Lively is a keeper. Better lock him up for long term
If you are wondering what it would take to go to the next level with Denver it’s a player like OMax, who can guard multiple positions, hit the occasional three, get on the floor and get you turnovers, get easy buckets in transition and do so without taking away shots from anyone else on the team. He’s the key to the 2023-24 season. A young player (like Evan Carter) who just energizes the team with his hustle and playmaking ability ON DEFENSE. We don’t have that guy. Few teams do. To win championships you need a shot in the arm mid-season that makes it feel like winning is all about effort instead of raw talent.
Vucevic is 3yr/60 which is pretty pricey for a 24 minute a Game Center, which is what he would be on this team but he’s 9th in rebounding and played every game last year. Good passer out of the post, a 35% three point shooter for his career and a team player. Ostensibly he’s 1/2 a joker and he’d come cheap.
Kyrie has been FANTASTIC defensively this year. I will take him scoring less and play making more if it means more energy to keep up that defense.
