Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown combine for 51, Boston Celtics cruise past Brooklyn Nets

The Celtics got a nice, simple, regular win over the Brooklyn Nets in their first In-Season Tournament game. Tatum and Brown combined for 51 and the Celtics got some really nice performances from their guards. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal is at the Garden with all that, how the offensive rebounding really helped the Celtics accomplish what they wanted, and how Brown plus bench units are still struggling.

  1. Some great play from Jrue tonight I loved how he posted up and got into the paint mainly in the second. He was one assist short of a triple double. Finally got a solid night from both PP & Hauser. You look at the final score and think Boston was in control all night, but this game was a shootout and if a lot of those treys don’t fall it could’ve ended bad. But it didn’t so. Also FTs are a pet peeve of mine-we missed 8. That’s unacceptable. Thanks John.☘️🔒

  2. Kornet is getting more comfortable playing now. Needs to work on catching the ball on passes and rebound! If I was him I’d work on getting my grip stronger and use a tennis ball to learn how to catch it without thinking.

  3. REALLY like the minutes by the starters here too: 33 for Tatum and Holiday and less for everyone else. Heck, Pritchard had more minutes than Jaylen.

  4. I’m the first one to dump or Kornet, and rightfully so. I’m still no where beer convinced he can do it every game, which the team needs… BUT, credit where credit is due. Kornet had himself a game tonight. Had a couple bonehead moments but he really did play a very good game on the boards and with some good passes. I’m not sold that he’s able to be the third big the team needs but I gotta be fair; he played very well tonight.

  5. John, I’m worried about a stat I heard tonight: The Celtics net-rating with JT on the floor is 2nd in the NBA. Without JT on the floor they’re 3rd WORST in the NBA.

  6. To add to my previous Kornet comment:
I really think seeing LK playing the way he did for a game showed how important it is to bring in a talented big who can bang down low on a regular basis. Having a big anvil down low, a la Kendrick Perkins, but maybe one who can shoot from 12-15 feet, would be absolutely lethal with this team. The one real option they don’t have right now. We got first round picks, time to stack this team to the brim with the RIGHT pieces

  7. Last comment I promise (for tonight): Can we ALL agree that, regardless of how well he may play on a given night, LK needs to never, ever, ever put the ball on the floor ever again 😂

  8. Joe danao here. I was at the game alot of hype espn in the house. The 1 thing i took from the game was wow Prichard really got a coaching look and he played well. He scored he rebounded. But why did he not have the assists?

  9. Thats what PP and Hauser should do. Make plays for the your teammates, great hustle, fight for every position and contribute points for at least 10 per game. That should make the bench disruptive and scary.

  10. You're right John, this was just a regular win against an inferior opponent and it was made easier because Brown and Tatum shot the ball well. I really liked the JT catch and shoot opportunities (he rarely gets that) but what really impressed me was the defense in the second quarter when Brad joined Scal and Mike on the commentary bench

  11. It was 38-44, they where shooting back and forth, that when I said they got the shooting going tonight but we need to start playing some basketball and that very next play jrue goes straight to the rack they start playing assist ball😊

  12. Happy about the win…The Nets were short handed though. Would have liked to see an occasional rehearsal of a 2 man game including post ups rather than "run and gun" for the first 3 quarters. It was a head scratcher when the game announcer at the start of the 4th quarter said "Jason and Jalon are having a good game and the other 3 starters are struggling". No man! The other 3 were not struggling…"Team Ball" was struggling. Heard so much about the personal sacrifices that each of the 5 talented starters must make to jell into an unselfish good team…I saw only 3 (KP, JH, DW) sacrifice. With all the mismatches tonight, KP with his length could have had a big game rather than 9 points. JB does play with blinders on. Enough said about balance scoring and unselfish team ball. Happy for the good play by the bench guys in the 4th quarter…good ball movement!

  13. This is going to be the regular season. Slowly building the understanding between the team as the Celtics make their run towards the playoffs

  14. IMO the bench pairings should be JT, jrue, al/luke, hauser, and pp + jb, white, KP, hauser, al/luke. the ball shouldnt be in JBs hands. it should be in white's hands with JB coming off screen from al/luke and KP. KP should be the primary option in that lineup. JB should never be the primary option in any lineup and should be an opportunistic/fastbreak/secondary scorer and playmaker. one of JT or KP should be on the floor at all times with bench players and the other starters as they are our best players. yes JB isnt our #2 if we want to win the chip. he functions better as a #3 or as a #4 on the nights white gets hot.

the way i see the bench now performance wise:

hauser-has been our best bench player. he has jumped over luke and pp in the rotation for me. i hope he keeps this up. we need him.

pp-its nice for pp to do other things when the shot isnt falling but he needs to be able to find ways to score a little to keep defenses honest. i'd suggest driving more as we saw in this game or getting into that mid-range/floater area. he and white also should never share the floor together. we are losing the minutes they are together. having 2 non "strong" guards out there doesnt work. pp works better as the lone guard in primarily bench units or paired with jrue or JB.

kornet-nice to see him pick it up recently. needs to look to score more. there was a play in the 2nd half where he played hot potato with jrue 2x along the baseline because he wasnt ready to receive and looking to score. almost led to a TOV and definitely was discombobulated offense.

brissett-i cringe every time he has to shoot the ball. the man cant make a shot to save his life. imo time to sit him and give stevens more mins. we are generally losing the mins he plays.

svi-his shot has disappeared like pp and weirdly looks lost on drives. must be the effect of not playing alot. i hope he finds his shot again soon.

banton-another guy where i cringe when he takes a shot. he looks lost out there. needs minutes in maine.not doing anything on defense and on the boards. its embarassing that a 6'`1 guard like pp is outrebounding him when he has a 6-8inch height advantage. he's not ready and shouldn't be getting garbage time mins. those mins should go to svi or stevens.

al-another guy whose shot has left him. still gives his all on defense and makes the right reads on offense but Brad should be really scouting now for his replacement. we need our young big of the future. Al is almost "done" so i hope we win the chip this season. his performance doesnt fall in line with his contract. i hope he takes a team discount and signs for the vet min instead next season.

imo if no one else separates themselves from the deep bench pack (outside of al, luke, pp and hauser) we will need 1 more reliable guy that can score off the bench. ideally an athletic swing in the mold of brissett but bigger/taller or a big who can shoot 3s. Brad still needs to tinker with this roster. imo brissett, banton, svi and stevens are all expendable for trades.

  15. Great show. This is I believe is the third game already where Tatum and Brown got to sit out most of the 4th quarter in a win. Feels different from a year ago. It’s early but I’m watching it. Especially when the starters don’t play in the 4th at all. Are the Js minutes down from last year? And if so do Tatum and Brown bodies feel different when compared to last year? If this continues that could be a big part of what had been discussed for two years since the warriors finals Tatum referring to being tired I believe.
