Mazzulla explained his thought process postgame, discussing the challenge:
“I don’t know if it was disrespectful or cheap to challenge in that situation,” Mazzulla said. “I don’t really agree or disagree. I think at the end of the day, my responsibility is to my players first, and having respect for the game. We’ve been in that situation before where we don’t shoot the last shot, we let the clock go out. We do that all the time.
“But with three-and-a-half minutes to go — and you have a group of guys that check in and they are playing as hard as they can — I think it’s my responsibility to my players first. It was a clear opportunity for me to empower the players, let them know that I’m coaching you, and those minutes to me are just as important as the start of the game. That’s what I told my players: I’ll always put them first.”

Honestly, I get it from both sides. You can’t fault the Raptors being annoyed with that.

Frankly, it’s surprising this mindset wasn’t really prevalent in other coaches before this. Respect goes both ways, coaches should coach for 48 minutes a game regardless who’s in. If I was a player who only sparingly got minutes I would be discouraged if my coach also took my minutes off

Fair for the Raptors to be annoyed, but also like, get over it. But very much respect Mazz’s reasoning for doing it. Setting the precedent that every moment of the game matters is helpful in addressing what was our Achilles heel last year of taking the foot off the gas.
No more fucking around and I dig it. Also the fact they fucked up that call in the first place was nuts.

Fantastic answer. You can’t tell your team they need to play a full 48 if your not willing to coach a full 48. I can understand why you might not like it from an opposing point of view but we need to care about our team and let them cry if they wanna cry

I respect it.

Also how many times did we see the C’s let their foot off the gas last year

If you don’t want the opposing team to challenge a call when they’re up by 30, don’t go down by 30. It’s that simple
