For some reason I thought Mitch Kupchak was on that same drive with Walter Davis and Phil Ford. Am I imagining it or was Mitch with them also? I think Mitch was the main man around the basket for Dean's American team along with fellow Tar Heel Tom Lagarde. Smith got some criticism for choosing five of his players for the team but still recouped the prestige the US lost in 1972 when an Olympic Committee member named Jones allowed the bloody Soviets extra time at the end of the game to make the winning shot. Smith also had Tate Armstrong from UNC's main rival in the ACC Duke, but also Scott May from Indiana, and the skillful Quinn Buckner from there also, Adrian Dantley from Notre Dame, Ernie Grunfeld from Tennessee, Phil Hubbard from Michigan, and Steve Sheppard from Maryland also a member of the ACC Conference as well. The closest game the US had on the road tothe Gold Medal was against the US territory Puerto Rico winning 95-94. The US beat Yogoslavia for the Gold by 21 pointa 95-74 getting redemption for that travesty of a loss in Munich to those damn Commie Russians.
They didn't impress me in this game like the one against st Augustine they were slow for some reason
I am seeing some improvements from last year. Better ball movement; spreading the court; sharing the ball; and utilizing the bench.
Offensively this team can average 100pts but HD has got to get them to guard the perimeter. Its been 12 years in a row UNC has guarded the 3 point line well
