Russillo talks about his #1 NBA draft miss, Wiseman over Anthony Edwards

There have been a few posts looking back at the 2020 draft takes at the time and it was interesting listening to this from Russillo today.

  1. The honesty here makes me respect Russillo. He basically admits he inflated Wiseman’s upside and ignored all the concerns while also admitting he basically dismissed what people said about Ant because he was fixated on the holes in his game. I think a lot of people did the same thing when comparing Ant to others in his class.

Edwards is gaining serious national respect. Next step for him is to improve his efficency and overall decision making consistency but ANT was and should have been the #1 pick.

I’ll be honest, I thought we should’ve traded the pick to load up behind KAT and DLo. Yes, I was foolish. I’m happy our ceiling is so much higher than it was back then.

I remember a lot of people wanted to trade the pick for Ben Simmons

The 2020 draft was SUCH a crapshoot.

All 3 of the projected top guys had serious question marks.

Rosas did a phenomenal job in getting accurate judgements. Not just with Ant but with Jaden too.

That being said, i was in the camp of either trade #1 for #3 and Bridges (thank god we didnt) although that was because i knew we would get Edwards or Ball, or trade down to #6-#7 for Haliburton

  6. I just wanna brag And say I never wanted to trade that pick and I’ve been an Ant fan since day 1, I have 9 of his jerseys lol

  7. Sometimes the draft is a complete crap shoot.

Edwards played on a bad UGA team. It wasn’t clear whether the lack of team success was due to the poor roster, Edwards, both and if so, how much each factor contributed. He also mentioned how he would rather be a football player instead. Turns out those comments and college career were irrelevant. He’s going to be a top 5 player soon.

Wiseman showed small spurts of dominance at Memphis but he played so little that it was hard to get a good read on his potential. He’s a big body with a huge wing span, I’m shocked he hasn’t shown more but maybe getting more minutes on the Pistons will help his development than the short leash he had with Kerr.
