Mailbag: Boston Celtics offensive philosophy, Jayson Tatum post ups, Jrue Holiday misses

The Celtics recent play has fueled a lot of mailbag questions, so this was a good time to get a few answers. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal gets into the Celtics offensive philosophy, Jayson Tatum’s dwindling post ups, Jrue Holiday’s struggles at the rim (and whether the C’s defense has anything to do with that), Sam Hauser’s development, and Kristaps Porzingis’ technical fouls.

  1. Psyched for tonight's (Wed) Bucks Celtics game. Thanks for the pod John. Let's go Celtics! 💚🍀💚🍀

  2. I think there should be a balance between sticking to the philosophies and noticing that you're just constantly taking what the opponent wants to give you. I think there should be a balance as well between the philosophy and forcing the issue inside + drawing fouls/finishing through contact. Veer too much into either and it either resorts to TOVs or just bad shooting. Lots of teams have figured out that you pack the paint vs. the celtics and force them to shoot mid-range or above the break/wing 3s. Just deny the rim and corner 3s. Teams are figuring out that the celtics are a mediocre 3 point shooting team if its not from the corners. Thats what the heat realized early and why they play zone. You play the math and live with forcing the celtics to beat you with above the break/wing 3s. If the Cs dont try to get penetration, fouls or to beat the zone they're just playing into the opponent's strategy. Even the hornets played zone against the Cs.

This is why the Cs look so good when are hot from 3 and look terrible when they're missing shots. They're a classic make or miss league team. What they lack and what i hoped they wouldve completely solved this season with KP, jrue and JTs postups is that we have a backup plan offense wise where we actually force the defense to adjust.

IMO to lessen the workload on Jrue, if brad can swing a deal for a big that can shoot and handle strength matchups, we can have that new big start, go back to double big and bring Jrue off the bench to work with al, pp and hauser. Jrue can still close games but lessening his defensive responsibilities to start the game will be good for keeping his legs fresh.

  3. I noticed Tatum is trying to start that backdown way further out. Like he wants to keep the philosophy but his muscle memory keeps him spaced out by the 3.

  4. Yes, the open corner 3 may beat higher percentage shot but isn't there also a higher likelihood to get fouled and go to the line on the layups?
