The Weirdest Player In The NBA.

One of the breakout stars of the season has been Alperen Sengun. Among players who average at least 20ppg he ranks 3rd behind just Giannis and LeBron in FG%. Sengun has been the best player on a Rockets team that shocked the NBA to start this season. But what makes him so interesting to me is the way he plays the game. Specifically how bizarre his game is. Which is what I want to talk about in this video.

My name is Noah Terranova. On this channel I make videos breaking down the film of basketball players in both long term and single game contexts. I use a combination of advanced stats, basic stats, tracking stats, and what I take away from watching the games to form my evalutions. My goal is to give my own perspective on the game with my own little twist on how I choose to present it.

  1. Where does Sengun rank among centers in the NBA?

  2. This kid is special. I think people discount him because he doesn't look like what they expect, but he's faster than the big centers and stronger than the fastest ones. But his IQ sets him apart.

Kid is probably a top five center today…. And he's only 21.

  3. I honestly think flexibility is a very underrated part of his game. He’s more fluid than a lot of guards and wings in the game today, and it allows him to pass and score at unreal angles. Like this is still a 6’10/6’11 man capable of doing the splits lol

  4. Great vid. Watching all of the little things this guy does when he catches the ball at the top of the key or on the elbow is super impressive. Whether it's in terms of feints and getting the defense to bite one way only to pass out to a cutter, or fake the dribble hand-off and beat his man to the bucket for an easy score is next level. Nobody is Jokic, but Sengun is exactly what Houston needs. His unselfishness and willingness to be coached hard by Udoka is helping to unlock the potential in their other young guys (Jalen Green, Jabari Smith, etc..). I'll be interested to see what they'll look like when their rookie Amen Thompson comes back off the injured list. He's another one who thinks 'pass first' — which is a good thing for that team. Udoka, Van Vleet, (and even Dillon Freaking Brooks) has turned the culture of that team around in a good way. I didn't like watching 'Harden Ball' that was super stagnant — but these young guys are really fun to watch.

  5. He is hustling also, not just on-ball stuff. Box outs, screens assists, total contested shots (3pt+2pt) and deflections, he is the best guy in houston for these categories.
All-NBA, MIP, AllStar is possibility this season. If you count power forwards in the competition He is top10 big, if not top 5 center.

  6. "weirdest" ? lol. What a backhanded compliment. People really have a hard time actually just coming out and saying this guy is simply a f***ing great player

  7. He isn't as dominant in the paint as Jokic but he can still give a player like AD the business inside. Also imo while not as high IQ as Jokic yet, he is a lighter player and hustles more, already plays better defense than Joker.

  8. He doesn't go against modern trends he is leaning into current trends. "Optionality." His ability as a center to be a triple treat gives them more options as a whole.
While he does need to keep improving his 3. The 3 point revolution is already normalized history. And the NBA has already continued to change. Teams like the nuggets and Celtics had already influenced how teams like the rockets and magic rebuilt.

  9. With C1 level english, i really understand only one or two words from multiple sentences. Weird pronunciation or accent or it must be me.
