Didn't figure out the point differential problem despite there being plenty of evidence for why you need that solved from the tournaments they were building model from. In season tournament is dumb and riddled with flaws. What if the Celtics had major injuries because they kept their starters in trying to get to that point differential? Doesn't it devalue the next game that the Celtics are invariably going to rest people for? The league probably just sacrificed a Friday night marquee match up against Philly for a Wednesday blow out against the probably going to trade half the roster Bulls. Great job.

Since this is the media space Tim M is typically on, his response to J Kidd after he asked that question – pure deflection and getting defensive. This need Tim has to remain in this hate/negative mindset, and as long as he spews it out with a smile “it’s ok” is corny and old. The “howdy partners” is meh too.
The point differential criteria is terrible and is not good for the league. We want to make these games “more competitive” yet we are incentivizing blowouts and forcing teams to have bad sportsmanship and run up scores.

Not sure how the NBA got the point differential equation wrong? The most basic (and first) tie-breaker when 3 teams finish with the same record is record amongst themselves. The second is point differential in the games between themselves. You do not reward everyone for beating up the patsy in the group (e.g. Bulls). Anyone who has ever organized a youth tournament know this!

NBA should do better scheduling in-season tournament where same conference teams should play on same day of their final group stage.

I know Windy was joking about Weltman not designing the Magic for rebounding and forcing turnovers, but he kind of did. He’s made a point of emphasis to draft really long, tall, and switchable athletes since coming here and both those stats are ancillary to that.

The way to solve it is to get rid of the stupid point differential as the tie breaker. Just make the tie breaker be regular season W% at the time of the last group stage games.
