Ty Jerome injury update (per Chris Fedor)

“Frustrated by a slow recovery process, and feeling like his progress started to “plateau,” Cavs injured reserve guard Ty Jerome is trying a different treatment plan in hopes of accelerating his return to the court. Jerome, sidelined for more than a month because of a severe right ankle sprain that has kept him from doing any substantial basketball-related activities, had a cast put on last week to immobilize his right ankle. A source said Jerome will need to be in the cast for about a week — a new approach to finally get him back to full strength. If it works, he can then start individual workouts….”

While Jerome was originally expected to be veteran Ricky Rubio’s understudy for one year, Rubio paused his career and stepped away from the team to focus on his mental health, which led to Jerome becoming the backup point guard coming out of training camp. He played five minutes in the team’s season-opening win against Brooklyn on Oct. 25 before suffering the painful injury two nights later in the home opener.”

TLDR: progress on his injury recovery has stalled and he has not returned to basketball activities or practice. They changed his treatment plan to hopefully let him fully heal. Optimistic timeline is weeks- if all goes well this week he could possibly progress to workouts next week (probably not team workouts or practices but individual work most likely).

Sounds a little rough that he’ll need to have his ankle immobilized, but also I wonder why this wasn’t done in the first place if it has always been considered a “severe” ankle sprain.

Thoughts?

Not a doctor, but very familiar with these kind of injuries at least. Based on the mention of a “plateau” rehabbing it, it’s likely that he’s either dealing with recurring pain or swelling (or both) whenever he’s testing it out.

The implication of that would be that the injury still has not healed, or the rehab is too much/too early and it’s getting aggravated. Putting a cast on it will ensure it has time to heal properly, then he can start the rehab process over without whatever is blocking him now.

Man that’s a bummer because it sounds like it’s gonna be closer to the new year before he’s ready, but I guess it’s nice to get an update. Interesting that the original plan was for Jerome to be Rubio’s “understudy”. He’s an interesting player and think he could fit with a lot of potential lineups.

Also, we are sooo fortunate to have found CPJ with this news and the Rubio situation

The spirit of Dylan Windler lives on with the Cavs. Hopefully Ty can break the curse!

I’m still hoping to see an Garland, Mitchell, Jerome, Strus, Mobley lineup. Maybe one day.
