Jason Timpf reacts to the slow start from Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and the Golden State Warriors and discusses potential roster upgrades at the NBA trade deadline that could increase their odds to win an NBA championship, including moving Jonathan Kuminga for veteran talent like Jerami Grant. Then Jason breaks down a similar situation for LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Los Angeles Lakers and explains why they should also test the trade market with Rui Hachimura.

Why would the Blazers help the Warriors when they have their pick this year top4 protected?
I agree the Warriors need a home run trade and to go all in. Who? Go get LaVine to upgrade Poole role, Williams takes OttoPorter 3D role, Drummond could give them some energy minutes and defensive glue guy Dalen Terry to take Iggy role?Vucevic is a skilled big they could run point though. Trade Klay, Kuminga, Moody and anyone not named Curry or Draymond.
Completely agree
Jason is the guy at the poker table who is always looking for a reason to go all in.
This make sense given Steve still not commiting to the young players. So I am 100% with trading him specially Moody is playing really good.
Trading any young player would be a massive mistake, unless you are bringing Giannis or Jokic back in the trade then nothing is going to move the needle. They are just old, simple as that.
I would be with you on the premise of upgrading the team, except that i doubt trading JK and CP3 for an Anunoby, Siakim or Grant would really make the Dubs much more of a title threat. The real problem is Klay's bad efficiency and defence and Dray's total unreliability. The big 3 have too much ego involved and have too much sway over Kerr. Kerr may be a great coach but he's emotionally compromised towards his vets to the effect that JK plays with the fear that any small mistake gets him benched, yet Klay plays with the confidence that he should be chucking up any shot he can think of, and should never be on the bench to start or end games. How many games has Dray already been injured, ejected or suspended? Is his defence really that elite that he's never considered as the problem?
I think the warriors should just make it an all or nothing deal. Like trade all the young guys for a star and some contributors over the age of 30. So Kerr would play them, Like at all
Mailbag Question:
Hi Jason. Does Small Ball still work for Golden State and does Small ball work better as a concept for a lineup instead of it being the actual makeup or identity of the team?
It seems to me that Steve Kerr has no idea how to play a big and refuses to recruit one yet warriors desperately need size. The undersized Warriors are being overwhelmed by size that it takes a toll on their body when they have to constantly guard bigger player for their position
Small ball was incredibly successful in the past because the lineup had speed and they were essentially playing against teams with unskilled and immobile bigs. Now that Warriors players have gotten even smaller, less athletic and slower, and bigs are getting more skilled and mobile, does Small ball still work?
Chris Paul+Kuminga for Derozan package looks good
Kuminga had his best game of the season tonight -CP3, GP2 and Andrew Wiggins were all out and JK had 17 points and no fouls, 6 rebounds.
This was obviously recorded before tonight's W's / Clips game. JK played really well: zero fouls, defending Kawhi/PG, good shooting percentage, etc. (Kerr called it "his best game of the season"). I personally would choose not to trade him. But i admit i know little about Jerami Grant …
āPlaying within the flow of a 5 men unitā so you mean āPlayingā š
yeah, kuminga slows down flow but….dubs' second unit has been fantastic all season long so far, so where is the logic there? he obc brings some value to offense even with his different game style
I think thatās given the title of the video would be a huge mistake.
Not because one canāt get something in return. But because thereās literally nothing any executive can conjure up short of welding, the MCU infinity gauntlet that will make this warriors team become a clearcut dominant favorite for the championship.
Thereās likely a chance of destroying any competitiveness this team has before they will figure out a combination that will actually improve the team.
Jk for scottie barnes
Chris Paul has proven he should be on this team
After this video Kuminga drops 17 points with 0 fouls
Still can't believe Kerr fumbled on Ant Edwards for Wisemanš¤¦š¾ then Wiseman for GP2
Big no no if they trade JK. They just have to give him the ball and let him play. There is big problem in the coaching right now.
No way. Trade Klay or Wiggins…
Tough call re trading Kumingaā¦interesting comments from Anthony Slater at The Athletic re Kuminga from last nights games vs Clipsā¦
āThis next clip mightāve been the most important possession of the eventual 120-114 Warriors win. It begins with Kuminga on the right wing, sprinting to the left corner to generate extra space. The play materializes and the ball finds Kuminga alone with eight seconds on the shot clock.
He had shot it well leading up to this moment, so a catch, gather and fire wouldāve been justifiable. But Kuminga had the slower, bigger Daniel Theis guarding him and Thompson a couple of yards away on the left wing.
So instead of dialing up his number, Kuminga immediately caught the pass and glided into a dribble handoff with Thompson, picking off Terance Mann in the process. It was reminiscent of a Green DHO action with Curry, taking advantage of a dropping big to get the worldās greatest shooter an open look.
Thompson curls off Kuminga. Mann gets caught in the mix. Theis is too far away. Thompson makes a 3 to put the Warriors up 10.
You can see the Warriorsā coaching staff reacting as it drops through the net. This is the exact type of instinctive read and execution thatāll get Kuminga on the court for longer stretches.
āIt all started with Jonathan Kuminga giving him a handoff in the corner,ā Green said. āJK could have shot it, could have drove it and he went uphill, DHO and got Klay going. I told him in that timeout you just got him 10 points off that one move.ā
Are you an agent???
Iām reality there isnāt an excuse for kuminga not to be a consistent contributor and honestly the only problem I see is Kerr
its time the warriors trade kuminga, his potential can be their big trade asset
You know who we should trade? Klay and that donkey green
But you will never say that
Nope. Kuminga is an important piece for the Warriors.
We should move off of looney . He makes the starting 5 worse than what it really is .
How much can they get from trading kuminga on a rookie deal. They have donkey earning 25m/yr giving them 6ppg and he isn't even playing the so called defense. He is just amassing techs and derailing the team. They have klay on 43m/yr giv8ng vet min production . They have wiggins who can't even guard anyone. Truth is simple.. warriors need a 2nd option. Neither klay nor wiggs is good enough for that. Trade one of them and get a 2nd option. Kuminga ain't the problem. Ofcourse this bias volume jason won't speak the truth cos dray is on same network.
Draymond is the problemā¦..we need Miles Turner. Send Draymond, Jackson and Pod. Keep Kuminga!!!!
warriors front office is way too comfortable
They should trade Klay and/or Draymond instead.
CP, JK, 1RD Pick for Bridges and Claxton
I just think Kuminga need to play more but I damn near do agree we need a vet also Looney but Mud this season
I believe we need to make a trade and soon. Either Wiggins or JK, with TJD and a couple first rounders for Myles Turner from Indy.
I like JK & TJD but they're young and most likely not ready to help us win now. Plus thats a lot of pressure on them. With Turner & Looney, we really wouldn't need TJD. Trading Wiggins helps JK get more mins. Or trading JK puts him in a better situation to grow as a player and hopefully Wiggins can get better and stay that third or fourth option with Turner in the starting lineup.
I think Turner can balance out the team and give us size and scoring along with great defense & rebounding. He can def help space out the floor with the starters and take some pressure off Steph, Klay & Dray. Turner can finish better at the rim than Looney and can shoot the ball well, including 3's. He's still young with experience, which Kerr likes, and he can play fast too if needed
Kuminga for Grant is genius and gets Steph help instantly. Also adding CP3 into it is š„ this man grasps basketball operations.
Siakam will come at a high cost
As a Pacers fan and as a Ben Mathurin fan I am exasperated with seeing how Ben has been handled this year.
Last night against Miami we allowed 142 points and it was a complete disaster.
When Haliburton scores 40 or more. The team is 0-2
When he scoresd 30 or more the is 2-4.
This #1 fast pace offence with the worst defence is complete nonsene and just not gonna cut it and not generating wins.
Ben Math is playing 4-5 minutes less per game than last year and while his D is not very good it has improved slightly. There is no reason to cut down his minutes. His boards and assists are up. TO are down and shooting percentage slightly better also.
The team then when out and got a diminutive 6'3 guard this summer in Bruce Brown who is not a scorer to take minutes away from him. He's a good player. But no star potential. Just a role player. No size… how many 6'4 and under guards do we need on this team???
Same dumb move of when they trade for Nwora and then trade Duarte away… (prefered we kept Duarte). Meanwhile Nwora NEVER sees the floor. Just dumb. Duarte could shot create. We could have used that against the Heat last night.. Dumb.
We are in win mode now with Carlisle and some fans completely enamored with Haliburton's stats and win now mode ( yet we are not winning more, record is less than last year at this time) and Buddy a 30 year old jacker-upper who I like, but is not the future is also eating minutes away. And the one player who SHOULD play more is Nesmith but he doesn't either.
Pacers don't appear to know what they're doing. Mathurin's growth is stomped, Pacers need a#4 PF real bad, maybe trade him to a team that needs a #2 and has a good #4… I'm open to ideas here.
You have to unleash Benn or trade him. Him standing in the corner 3 waiting for passes that never come is not working and stunting his growth and development and not helping Pacers win.
Meanwhile just like he did in Dallas, Carlisle will be enamored with his new high usage toy ( Doncic then) and Haliburton now…. And yet, the end result will be the same. Great stats, great offence… bad losses. No playoffs.
Please trade Ben Mathurin or unleash him so he can fulfill his destiny.
Ben has superstar potential and this year, he doesn't smile anymore. There is no more swag to his game, doesn't even argue calls much with the refs. Doesn't communicate with teammates. He is not having fun. He feels blocked.
Can you blame him?
They got at least 2 rings in the tank they can win
Why would the blazers trade JG to the warriors when we own their 1st round pick and could get a lottery pick from them missing the playoffs?? Gotta do your research boss man
Why not trade curry instead…?
Yup
I just donāt think we got the value out of kuminga we want. OG shows some moments where I feel like he isnāt much better esp not next year. If they donāt give us an even trade w like a siakam itās whack imo cuz siakam is in a one year and is a rental
All of this wouldnt have mattered if Warriors had just traded Poole plus whatever for Porzingis instead of Cp3 and couldve kept Kuminga.
