Stock up, stock down: What’s up with Evan Mobley’s offense? | Cleveland Cavaliers podcast

On a new episode of Locked on Cavs (Tuesday, December 5, 2023) hosts Chris Manning (@cwmwrites, The Just Basketball Show, SB Nation’s Fear the Sword, Forbes Sports) and Evan Dammarell (@AmNotEvan, Right Down Euclid) debut a new show structure they’ll be doing once a week: Stock up, stock down and holding. In this show, they’ll each pick a part of the Cavs story – a player, a offensive trend, a moment, something – that they are rating higher than they did a week ago, another that they are lower on and a third that they are holding, waiting to learn more before picking one direction or the other.

This episode was produced by Jake Stephens. The intro music is from our friends at Astral Radio.

  1. He’s gonna take time to be his best self I think but it’s just a souped up version of his super solid play most likely with a viable 3

  2. Stock Up – Jarrett Allen. I think JA has shownn he is no longer on the trade block. Evan is shown he is not ready to be starting 5. JA has improved on his offensive efficiency, and he is still a double-double threat as well as a defensive star. If only he played in a defensive scheme that didn't put him in position to rebound vs. 2 opposing players at once.

Stock Down – JB as a coach, developer of talent, his minutes distribution, and his role definition. JBs overswitching, overhelping man defense doesn't fit these roster. Again, putting our bigs in spots to rebound vs. 2 opposing players at once. DG, Max, and Niang are best used in a zone defense concept. Not using Evan and / or JA as our halfcourt offense facilitators is a disservice. Handoffs or the ball handler in the Pick & Roll while our perimeter players are coming off screens to generate space or potentially cutting to the basket. Evan becoming a 3pt shooter is not the answer to get the best out of our team. Complimentary basketball need to be apparent. Play faster on offense u have to slow it down on Defense. 3 – 2 zone D will be the answer. And where is the CPJ minutes? U are already small off the bench, embrace it even more. CPJ, Caris, Okoro, and Niang need to come off the bench. Wade and Tristan are next to play in cause of foul trouble.

Holding – our backcourt. I think DG and Spida still are not being used in the best way. U are asking both of them to play hero and dribble through 3 defenders at once. Both are exhausted, and JB is asking too much of them. Attitude reflects leadership. They both don't believe in JBs schemes to me. They both want change, and I believe either its with JB scheme or with JB himself
