Interesting idea from a fan/analyst on twitter: What if the Target Center crowd gave Shake a standing ovation when he checks into games? Similar to what Philly fans did for Trea Turner during his dry spell last season. Maybe kindness & positive reinforcement could go a long way right now?

Interesting idea. This was [the tweet:](https://x.com/CharlieWaltonMN/status/1731375278687994108?s=20)

“Going forward, I’d love to see the Target Center crowd give Shake a standing ovation every time he checks into games. Similar to what Philly fans did for Trea Turner during his dry spell last season. Feels like some positive reinforcement could go a long way right now.”

Thoughts? There is science behind this. [Trea Turner’s season went from bad to stellar and he thanks the fans (even put up billboards thanking Philly fans).](https://www.inquirer.com/phillies/trea-turner-phillies-ovation-positive-reinforcement-20231018.html#:~:text=It%27s%20been%20well%20acknowledged%20that,and%20career-worst%20offensive%20numbers) Correlation is not causation but he said the crowd flipping the script and rallying behind him in his tough stretch boosted him up and helped him.

A video of crowd and Trea Turner: [https://x.com/CharlieWaltonMN/status/1731375320547176657?s=20](https://x.com/CharlieWaltonMN/status/1731375320547176657?s=20)

These players are human. Shake is clearly in his head and his cold shooting is uncharacteristic of his career self. At the least, it’s an intriguing idea.

It might even make players want to stay in MN. Ex: Naz has said that the fans were part of his decision to stay here. Last year, NAW talked about the fans cheering when he checked in (when he first arrived so before he started playing well for us) and how he appreciated it and it gave him confidence. TBJ used to have his comments turned off on his social media profiles when he played for the Lakers, now his comments are turned on.

Thoughts? I almost want to try it purely for research purposes lol.

EDIT: Jon K is giving support to this idea! https://x.com/JonKrawczynski/status/1732480481923305611?s=20

  1. Yeah! Why can’t we be friendlier and more welcoming like… *checks notes* …Philly fans!

I am 100% behind this and will be doing it myself when I’m at games! Been saying for awhile our cheering is more important than we seem to think it is and I’d like to use it for good.

Positive reinforcement is better than negative reinforcement! If we can help spark him with our cheers and he turns into the player he has been his whole career, that will be huge for the team and give us when more to cheer about!

Minnesotan living in Philadelphia. This is imo the biggest difference between the two fan bases and it absolutely works.

I have no doubt that Minnesotans are just as passionate as Philadelphia fans, but when you only hear cheers at the end of games and plenty of boos in between it becomes understandable why players get in their own heads

Couldn’t that be construed as a little bit condescending? Maybe Shake doesn’t think he is doing that bad?

  5. I was at the last IST game and this jackass behind me kept yelling about how shake sucks and how finch should pull him. Obnoxious mother fucker indeed.

Would be cool to just do this for everyone. First time someone checks in hype em tf up.

I’m down with it. I don’t go to a lot of games, but when I do, it’s on! Can we get a walkout song for him, too? I’ll throw KC & The Sunshine Band’s (Shake,Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s Boom! Shake the Room out there to get the discussion going. Philly connection on the latter not initially intended, but it works. Awwwoooooo!
