The Bucks Offense Looks Scary, and It Will Only Get Better | Group Chat

Justin Verrier, Wosny Lambre, and Rob Mahoney talk about the Milwaukee Bucks and their offensive barrage against the New York Knicks in the quarterfinals of the in-season tournament. They discuss how Milwaukee is developing into the scoring threat everyone thought they could be when they acquired Damian Lillard and how they can get even better with some key adjustments from Giannis Antetokounmpo.

  1. Giannis and Dame need to run high P&R to succeed in the playoffs. It will get better and in the end gets Giannis in a position where he's comfortable, bc when he's going downhill and making decisions that way is when he's unstoppable. He's used to being THE GUY, and doesn't know how to play a different role especially with his skillset. Whereas Dame has a wide skillset to where he doesn't need to be the primary and can play more off ball and space. But there neeeeds to be more balance for the Bucks in order for them to win it all. Dame does not look comfortable enough and he is compromising his game to cater to Giannis. Dame is more aggressive and looks better when Giannis is off the court and he's able to run high P&R w/ Brook or when he gets that high double pick. If Giannis can figure out how to play w/ Dame, it'll be tough for any team to defend them. But the ISO needs to be more limited and there needs to be more flow/randomness with the offense.

  2. The guy on the left seems to be a giannis hater, lol. These things haven't propelled you to the top of the sport in the biggest moments? He averaged 30 doing these things, won a championship doing these things, put a city on his back doing these things when his teammates aren't able to do their part countless times. Its crazy to me that when some players lose its never about the things they aren't doing like a kd. With all that bag and iso prowess, it leads him where without steph? And I like Kd, my point in using him is to show that players win differently. When that works consistently on a game to game basis, to sit there and shit on it when only one team can win the chip is stupid. If that is the case every year, all other 29 teams' best players need to reinvent themselves. The other players get paid too, and while we no longer need every other possession for giannis to dominate, we still definitely need it. So yes, he can iso julius randal, sometimes it'll lead to a bucket and other times it won't. As for the pick and roll, it's not that he isn't comfortable with it as a general skill. He does it just fine with middleton and has done it with other players as well throughout his career. He isn't comfortable with it with dame. And that's two very easy reasons if you watch all the games and compare it with how Dame ran pick and rolls with nurkic and now Brook. Dame prefers the big to sit on the pick so he can get around and survey for a 3 and if not a shortroll pass. Giannis does not sit. He sets and goes right away, which is not giving dame the time he needs. Also, on the short roll pass, I do agree with the guy on the left that giannis does not have the best of hands (in certain situations, he catches lobs with the best of them for example). He isn't catching low passes cleanly. He's used to getting passes high from Khris, but that's a harder pass for Dame because of his height. All they have to do moving forward is get better at the way each other likes to run the pick and roll and then find a balance of when to run it which way. If i had to guess, it would be the majority of Dames way in the 4th and Giannis' way before that.

  3. I’m not sure if the dude on the left is just a filler for the show but he has no idea what he’s talking about because if Ben Simmons doesn’t shoot threes he’s scared of failure but when Giannis shoots threes he has a huge ego and can’t coexist with dame

  4. Here’s why there haven’t been as many PnRs as people expected:
    – When asked during the Bucks vs Nets halftime interview, “Why you aren’t spamming the Dame/Giannis PnR.”, Adrian Griffin said that there are too many other things they need to figure out on offense, and get everyone involved. He said the Dame/Giannis PnR is going to be there by the end.
    2. The way Giannis operates out of a PnR set is different from what Dame expected. BroLo has an orthodox way of setting picks and rolling, which is why his PnRs with Dame work like a charm. Giannis, at first, set soft picks and slipped without giving time to Dame to make any decisions. He fixed that now, and he sets traditional picks. The other thing was that he rolls short. That one took a while to adjust for Dame but he is getting it now.
    – The other thing is that the Bucks run some PnR, but they do a lot of their damage running DHOs, and pistol sets. All in all, PnR is not the only two-man action. The Bucks diversify the offense a ton, and even how to harness the Dame/Giannis combo.

That’s why they still don’t run a ton of them, and they are likely to not spam it to death.
