Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid lead Minnesota Timberwolves’ win over Spurs in Anthony Edwards’ return

The Minnesota Timberwolves welcomed Anthony Edwards back after a two-game absence as the Wolves won their fifth game in a row, downing the San Antonio Spurs at Target Center. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the win, highlighting a dominant performance from Rudy Gobert on both ends and a strong second half showings by Naz Reid and Mike Conley as the Wolves finally created separation and began to pull away after a rocky first half.

  1. Ant should probably sit on Friday. Definitely a step slow and didn't attack the rim like he should have. I'm sure he's going to be really sore this morning. Lot's of stray voltage moments from both him and KAT. Turnovers, offensive fouls, throwing up bad shots, getting too iso heavy when the ball movement is picking up and other players are knocking down shots. Don't know if I'm ever going to be a fan of finch's "Do whatever the hell" Offense when they are so much better running set's for Rudy and Karl and Mike to set up their perimeter players.

Liked An'ts effort on defense fighting through screens. He got lost an a couple of down screens but for the most part he was doing a good job of fighting through the screens early and not getting caught underneath.

I liked seeing Finch pull both him and Kat from the floor when they lost their focus on the offensive end and went rogue. You need these two guys to be a big part of the offense but to also understand that going heavy in isolation takes everyone else out of a good shooting rhythm and makes the team get sloppy and complacent, especially if you won't kick out and take bad shot after bad shot.

Don't know what else to say about Karl other than he needs to pass the ball or stop and pop when the defender is in position on his drives to the basket. Just seems like he never wants to stop once he gets rolling to the basket and It ends up being a double-edge sword for him.

  2. Was an ugly win against a inferior team. In the past the wolves would find a way to lose these types of games. Still hesitant about this team and it's16-4 record but I'll take it

  3. Naz had a bad game and he opens with a big performance by Naz? He shot 1-7 from 3, 7-18 from the field with 15 points. He had some nice defensive moments, but that doesn’t make this a great game, nor does it make a big performance.

  4. Rudy is obviously fantastic this year but i really feel like Mike Conley is the most important trade piece we got to make this team work. Love that dude hopefully we can get him back.

  5. @bbeecken I felt like while you hit some of the key talking points you missed quite a few as well. For example this was the 10th game where we held an opposing team to under 40% shooting (in 20 games.) The 8th time we held a team under 100 (with multiple other games where teams got to triple digits in garbage time.) The Spurs scored 56 of their 94 points in the paint. An unusual night to say the least. I feel like you should highlight the job we did on Wemby. He dropped 29 in our first meeting, this one he scored 12 on 4 of 13 shooting. We also blocked multiple 3 point shot attempts (3 or 4 at least.) This speaks to our perimeter pressure even without Jaden and with a less than 100% Ant. The game was definitely bad and a statistical outlier, but there are some interesting things to see if you look closely.

  6. I was a big fan of Dlo and somewhat of an apologist for him, but really glad the trade for Conley went through. He's fantastic.

  7. Ben, every single postgame pod: “you guys know how much I absolutely HATE single game +/-. Nothing pisses me off more than when people use that stat to try to say a player had a good game. It’s disgusting. Grow up losers!!!!

…anyway, so Rudy was great tonight and to prove it, let me tell you about his plus/minus…”
