Utah Jazz leaders spoke to Point of the Mountain board about building a new arena there — but Salt Lake City is ‘working hard’ to keep the Jazz downtown
Hey pals… been working on this story for months now, honestly. Some big takeaways:
– Jazz ownership met with officials from the Point of the Mountain Land Authority in Draper about potentially putting a new arena there “about a year ago”
– But SLC mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Downtown Alliance is trying to keep the Jazz downtown. It’s one of the Downtown Alliance’s major goals for the year.
– Jazz are looking for an arena that better suits NHL hockey
– Most important is the idea of a sports and entertainment district around the arena that the Jazz can make more revenue with.
But yeah, click on and read the story anyway, plz. I’ll try to answer any questions you all have, too.

Keep the Jazz in slc please. Nobody wants to go to the point of the mountain to watch a game. Build a new practice facility there for all I care, or just build a NHL arena. But keep the delta center where it is I beg

That sounds awesome! Any idea if this would be more on the north end of the point like the former prison area or south end closer to Thanksgiving point? Thanks for your great work!

I’d be bummed. It would make the commute to games farther for alot of people. Downtown is nice, it’s close to the freeway, it’s close to TRAX, there are plenty of places to park nearby and plenty of places to eat.

I ain’t going that far. Ridiculous

This would be as dumb as idea as the Jazz playing in highlighter yellow.

If they move the arena, Ryan Smith can move to Kentucky and revoke is rights to the Jazz immediately. Hell no.

NBA teams already think SLC is boring when they visit, it’s nice they have more options for dining and drinks downtown. But Now you want to send them to Draper?

So are you guys still going to be fans when Ryan Smith moves the team to Vegas? We’ve seen this before in the league. The shitty endless tanking is going to gut the attendance to watch this joyless team of untalented scrubs and then the inevitable failure to get SLC or Draper to pony up 2 billion dollars for a free new stadium will lead to Vegas.

The mayor of slc sucks and the area the arena is in is no longer safe. I cant believe how dirty and trashy it has become up there. Its one if the reasons we stopped going to games in the past 2/3 years. I wouldn’t mind it being closer to me as i live in Utah county but i don’t mind the drive to where its at now too or riding the front runner. With all that being said, I think the stadium is perfect where it is and I dont think they should move it. I do wish they would clean up the area instead of trying to pour more money into developing something we dont need. Moving it would hurt the local restaurants as they get alot of business before games too. If it gets moved once what will stop Ryan from moving it out of state next? I know its in a trust but idk. So far I’m not really a fan of him owning the team.

Why can’t they just move to the Maverick Center for a year and then build a new arena at the current site?

If these clowns move the Jazz away from downtown that will be it for my fandom. Ryan Smith will have managed to do what even Ty Corbin could not.
Seriously – Ryan’s done one good thing as an owner, the streaming service, and that’s because his hand was forced with the RSN bankruptcies. Everything else he’s done – bringing in Ainge, trading everyone – has resulted in a “masterpiece of dogshit”.

Been hearing the rumblings for a while specifically where Southtown mall is.
I’m happy the news is out. Think everyone can agree that NBA arenas are supposed to be in the heart of the city.
Taking the Jazz out of downtown slc would rub a good amount of fans the wrong way even if it’s for the better.
If you thought the rebrand stuff was dramatic this is going to be 20x worse. If you want a city “Block” for the Jazz invest in the area. Grow the community don’t move it.
Thanks for the write up Andy!

Going southbound on I-15 to get to a 7:00 tip is a nonstarter for me and I’m guessing many people who live/work downtown north. Theres also no public transport to speak of down there. I imagine some Utah county people would attend more who don’t attend much now but arenas and stadiums should be in metro downtown areas not suburbs.

Yeah no. All environmental, vibes, and community stuff aside, we need stadiums to be closer to the ppl, not further out where everyone has to drive, although I’m sure there’s no shortage of driving to this stadium

As a Jazz fan from out of state, it’s really funny seeing people talking about how they’ll no longer be fans if the arena moves 20-30 minutes away from where it currently is. I wish I didn’t need a flight to go to a Jazz game.

If the Jazz leave SLC I’ll finally have a reason to give up on this dreadful team
