When is the last time the team with the best record in the NBA didn’t have an MVP candidate?

We’re 1/4th of the way through the season and less than 6 months ago the media narrative was a combination of “worst trade in NBA history” and “KAT wouldn’t even get picks” but now the team effort is so amazing that not one player is an MVP candidate? Which is it?

I’ve never seen the team with the best record after an actual signifcant amount of games get disrespected this hard.

Rudy might get to top-10 if he has one more dominant week, but I’m not mad. Ant was top-6 recently but he was slumping, missed 2 games, and had a bad shooting night on Wednesday. KAT is definitely not top-10 this season even with his consistency. Our strength is not in one player carrying the team (like Luka or Jokic), our strength is in suffocating defense and effort from everyone.

Ant will get up there once the wolves prove this winning record isn’t just a fluke. Give it a month or two

Not sure the answer but I was staring at this list earlier wondering where I would slot a Wolves player and I don’t think I’m replacing anyone there.

Rudy is obviously very important to this team, but I don’t think defense will be taken into account for MVP since it has its own award.

Ant has been stellar but his averages don’t really beat anyone here.

KAT has been important but is nowhere near MVP numbers.

I think the way the team is built it legitimately requires everyone so it doesn’t leave much room for one guy to shine.

There have been other teams like this for sure. The first one I thought of were the 2015 Hawks.

They were the one seed and didn’t even have an all star starter. Four reserves though and the coach of the year.

Every now and then the NBA has teams that are more about the “sum of the parts” than any star power. Not that I think that is the case with this team mind you. I just think defense isn’t sexy and Ant missed some time right before this ladder came out. Also, the IST definitely catapulted Tyrese into the conversation so missing out on that didn’t do our stars any favors.

  5. It’s because Ant and KAT don’t really have a case to be on that ladder at this point and there’s no chance Gobert is gonna get love for MVP since the award is heavily skewed towards offensive production.

If the Wolves continue to maintain #1 in the West and the best overall record in the league, I think we may see some love for Gobert in the conversation given his defensive impact. But I think we need to see all of the above for a longer period of time before he might get that respect.

  6. You have to consider we’ve been ass for 35 years, so don’t be offended if the media doesn’t instantly fall in love with us.

well KAT had an awful time scoring for two weeks, ANT was out for a bit, and Rudy is Rudy and the wide audience will never give MVP to a mostly defensive force

who is the MVP candidate from the team right now?

Honestly feels like Rudy is our mvp. Ant is a obvious candidate as our go-to scorer and guy that can get his own shot and all that. But Rudy’s impact on defense is why we’re winning winning. It really has been a team effort though so fuck it. You get a mvp. You get a mvp. You get a mvp

whatever year the Jazz were the 1-seed with Rudy and Mike

It’s way too early for MVP speculation. Embiid could get injured. Jokic will be in the mix no matter what. KD could explode for a week or miss a couple. If SGA can keep OKC in the top 5ish in the west he’ll have some support but if they drop below that, it’s hard to say.

All that to say, this could look completely different come January.

  11. Their team defense would be MVP of the season. One or two starters out and they’re still very competitive. Not sure the same can be said for the other teams when those key individuals are out.

As a Minnesota sports fan, I wouldn’t worry about the MVP race and worry about a deep playoff run. Minnesota teams have not won a championship since 1991, but god damn we have gotten so many great ass players playing on our team. Sad part is that my three favorites went to Boston (KG, Moss, and curse breaker David Ortiz (not only my favorite Twins, but also my favorite baseball player of all time)). Even then, we got Adrian Peterson, Kevin Love, Paraise and Kirill for the Wild, and Justin “Gritty” Jefferson and Jared Allen. That being said, I don’t care about individual awards; I want one of my teams to win it all and the Wolves are killing it this year. The Wolves are winning games where I thought for sure they were gonna lose.

I don’t really care about these..but Booker has missed roughly 50% of the season and still ahead of Ant?

    Ok

  14. ndmaynard

We have 3 MVP candidates even if the polling doesn’t suggest it yet

  15. If they went 20 deep the wolves would have 3. Plus the media hates gobert. Bookers been hurt too long to beat out Rudy there.

  16. Idk who you put on this list from our team. Everyone is balling together, all those guys stick out like sore thumbs on their teams

  17. Gobert_Clamped_Luka_

Welcome to having Rudy Gobert on your team

The suns having 2 in the top ten just shows this is more about PPG than anything else.

At the very least, Rudy should be replacing Booker on this list.

Because having “2 MVP’s” on this list for the current….7th seed in the West makes ZERO fucking sense.

  19. le_sweden

If the wolves play like they have so far all year and we finish with 55+ wins (on pace for 66) Gobert should finish top 5. Ant has been great this season but I don’t know how you can say he’s an MVP candidate when he’s not even the biggest contributor to our team’s success this season IMHO.

Ant and KAT are ceiling raisers but what Rudy has brought to our identity is what the 23 Wolves are all about.

Suns are the 7 seed and have two in these rankings.
