What’s at stake for the Toronto Raptors between now and the NBA Trade Deadline? | Fake Trade Friday!

In Episode 1536, Sean Woodley goes solo to lay out the options and the stakes at play for the Toronto Raptors as the calendar hits December 15th, unofficially opening up NBA Trade season, before introducing a new recurring segment: Fake Trade Friday! Off the top, Sean digs into the current state of affairs for the Raptors, and details why the next two months represent perhaps the last chance for the Raptors’ front office to right the wrongs of the last couple years and set the franchise back on course into the next few years of the Scottie Barnes era. It’s the Last Chance Saloon! Next, Sean outlines the ideal outcomes for the Raptors over the next couple years — both fantastical and unlikely though not impossible and more realistic. Is there any way for the front office to get creative in an effort to retain both O.G. Anunoby and Pascal Siakam to pair with Scottie Barnes moving forward while having enough on hand to reshape the roster in a way that makes sense around then? Or is the more realistic outcome a deal of one of Anunoby or Siakam, with the other being retained to pair with Barnes? Lastly, Sean outlines the things that can absolutely cannot happen for the Raptors over the next two months before debuting Fake Trade Friday with a hypothetical deal that would almost surely work for both the Raptors and New York Knicks, if only that damn lawsuit didn’t exist…

  1. Its not a dream outcome to resign Pascal because all his metrics are declining and he's a non shooter. Those don't age well. Extending Pascal won't get you a great return and it continues to crowd the court with Poetyl and Shroder, other non shooters. Plus, the cost of resigning OG and Pascal is too much especially for what Pascal has shown. It's time to cut the cord and recoup picks and young prospects that can grow with Scottie. Send Pascal to a contender like the Pacers.

  2. The tax gets calculated at the end of the year. Which is important. It means starting season as a tax team doesn't mean the tax must be paid. Obviously the farther past the tax line the harder it is to get under it.

With that disclaimer the bill coming due for having all 3 forwards still on the roster on large contracts is the end of 2025/26. That is a long time in NBA roster building terms.

We also have no idea what kind of conversations they have had already. They should have a good idea already if they can realistically re-sign him.

Next year the most those 3 guys can cost is 100 million and that is with both OG and Pascal getting the max. All with the cap going up its max amount of 10%. Which would mean 181 million tax line. But its more likely that trio costs more in the 90-95 million range. Leaving 85-90 for the rest of the roster while avoiding the tax. Definitely possible.

Which means the decision on if these guys are worth paying the tax for is actually 3 deadlines and 2 off seasons away.

So with that in mind you definitely tinker. Start with all the other UFAs first. Can you find depth that makes more sense? Do the same again in the offseason with the new group of pending UFAs. Of course if someone wants to give us a real asset for Boucher great.
