The Sacramento Kings have their Christmas Comeback Spoiled by the Minnesota Timberwolves

All the Sacramento Kings wanted for Christmas was to end this second night of a back-to-back curse but the Minnesota grinches had another idea Kings fall to the Timberwolves 110 to 98 and we’re breaking it all down right here for you on lockon Kings you are locked on Kings your daily

Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome into lockon Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long today’s

Episode is brought to you by prize Pi the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports go to prize.com locked on NBA and use code all lowercase locked on NBA for our first deposit match up to one $100 my name is Matt George I have the privilege of

Being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for abc10 news and honestly even though the kings are now 0 and four on the second night of a back-to-back so the trend in that sense continues tonight’s loss out of the four second night of a back-to-backs

Tonight’s loss was the the least noticeable in terms of the the backto back being the major reason right compared to the first three losses on the second night of back-to-backs where the Kings just didn’t look like they had the energy didn’t look like they had the fight completely fell apart and really

Had no business being in that game or those games tonight the Kings did show a lot of fight they played overall pretty poorly in the first half and came back with a good effort in the second half had a near epic fourth quarter comeback that ended up falling short we’ll get

Into all that and break that all down but to me this was less about the second night of a back-to-back and more about a really really good defensive team coming into your building and beating you both teams were short-handed the Kings missing Malik monk tonight we’re going

To talk about his importance later on in the show and and the Timberwolves missing Carl Anthony towns however the Timberwolves did did have Jaden McDaniels available tonight who was missing in Minnesota when the Kings beat the tea wolves earlier this season that ended up being a major Difference Maker

When it came to dearon Fox we’re going to talk talk about two major battles that happened between a wolves player and a Kings player tonight the battle of the young Stars dearen fox versus Anthony Edwards and the battle of the big men Rudy goar versus uh damont

Sabonis that’s coming up here in the next segment but overall like this is the ninth time this season that the Timberwolves have held a team under a 100 points there’s a reason why this team is the number one team in the Western Conference and before you chalk

It up to oh here’s another bad matchup for the Sacramento Kings cuz here’s another team that plays defense has length and athleticism on the wings the t-wolves are a bad matchup as of right now for basically every team like the Rudy gobear trade is really starting to

Pay off I still don’t know if I would have given up as much as the Wolves gave up in that trade but Rudy goar was really really good tonight of course Anthony Edwards is an absolute Superstar one of my favorite players in the league to watch and he loves playing here in

The golden one Center uh so even without Carl Anthony towns beating up a team as good as the Sacramento Kings holding a a team with as prolific of an offense as the Sacramento Kings uh have to under a 100 points that’s possible for this group because of how well they play on

The defensive end of the floor so again tonight is less about the second night of a back toback to me tonight is more about the defense that the Minnesota Timberwolves uh pushed towards the Kings or showed the Kings and Sacramento trying to figure out how to break that

Down and they started to figure things out but it was kind of a case of too little too late in that fourth quarter truthfully like the physicality in the first half inside the paint was like the only real indicator that I saw of okay here’s the maybe the second night of a

Back-to-back fatigue wearing on the Kings like the kings were getting beaten up in the paint in the first half 44-22 that was the points in the paint Advantage for Minnesota at halftime most of those points were coming from Rudy goar who was absolutely d in that first half right there was

Nothing the Kings could do to stop him the kings were getting pushed around in the paint weren’t doing any pushing back but credit to Sacramento this is what’s different from the other second night of back-to-back so far this season they rallied at halftime they stepped up in

The second half they picked up that physicality especially on the inside to where the t-wolves still finished with a decent advantage in points in the paint 66 to 52 but Sacramento won the second half points in the paint battle by a a pretty noticeable margin so I give

Credit uh to the Kings there Mike Brown after the uh after the game talked about the length and physicality uh and athleticism and the defense that the Minnesota Timberwolves play the Kings are obviously trying to become a a a good solid defensive team so I asked

Mike like do you see what the t-wolves are doing and try and pick and choose things that you like or try and follow that example a little bit Mike toes a very fine line here between making a a personnel excuse and pointing out the Personnel advantages that the

Timberwolves have take a listen Mike more on Minnesota’s defense I think this is the ninth game that they’ve held a team under a 100 points um when you’re looking at a team like that that’s doing some of the things that you’re trying to get this team to do how much do you

Borrow or are you inspired or do you try and take from what the D wolves are doing and and apply it or try to apply it to your group it’s I mean they have different they got different personnel with us you know they got a center at 72 and was you

Know defensive player of the year I know once maybe twice before so he’s a high level guy on that end of the floor you know you you got some length and you got some athleticism you’re talking about playing NZ Reed at your four and he’s shooting 40% from the three Kyle

Anderson at 69 Jen McDaniel can guard one through four and some fives at 69 610 uh when you have that length and athleticism uh you can do a lot of things differently you know I met when I was coaching in San Antonio uh and we had Tim Duncan and David Robinson back

There uh we we even we we started Danny fair at the small for and we told Danny just to press up press up because we wanted their wings to drive by us we got two guys 71 and 72 protecting the rim so there are a lot of things that you can

Do different with with the type of length that they have so does some of it translate some of it does but we have different Personnel than than them and so we have to play a certain way based on our Personnel but uh Finch does a uh

A f fantastic job with that group and I me Tim connley he he doesn’t get enough credit but he’s done a fantastic job putting that team together so again a very very fine line there for Mike because some could say hey Mike’s making an excuse here he’s saying we don’t have

Those kind of players so we can’t play that kind of Defense I don’t think that’s what he’s doing at all others of you might be hearing that and going yes Mike thank you for saying that because the Sacramento Kings need to make Personnel changes need to make Personnel

Moves needs to make need to make upgrades to this roster if they want to get to or or try to get to the defensive level that the Minnesota Timberwolves are at I understand both of those sides right and I again I don’t think Mike In

That clip is making any kind of excuse I think he’s pointing out the differences that the t- wolves have that the Sacramento Kings don’t have and where he might be asking Monty and asking Wes and asking the king’s front office to get him some of those players every team in

The league is looking for length and athleticism at the wing position it’s patented in the league right now so that’s not an easy accomplishment to make the Kings do need to make upgrades they do right to get to where they say they want to go which ultimately every

Team is playing to win a championship right I think we all can see that the Kings as of now they just lack a piece or two to help them get there they have the foundation in place but they just lack that piece or two to help them

Defensively and to to to make that difference with length and athleticism to to to limit the bad matchups that these Kings teams have faced so far this season against lengthy and athletic Wing teams I hear that completely I acknowledge that and any Kings fan who is calling for that I don’t think you’re

Wrong at all and and I don’t dismiss that however I would like to say from my position here uh hosting the lockon Kings podcast never ever trying to tell anybody how to fan I do see consistently after Kings losses this reaction the two most common reactions I’ve seen and I

Received both of them from two different people tonight the first one is oh the Sacramento Kings are in trouble and the second one is man the kings are going to be a first round playoff exit again I think we just need to cool it on those reactions espe especially after

Every single loss look the kings are 17 and 11 last season at Christmas time they were 17 and 14 so they had played three more games had three more losses same amount of wins but regardless this Kings team given the circumstances they’re in a better position this year

Than they were last year and they’ve dealt with more adversity this year than they did last year yes there are concerns because this Kings team ultimately ran it back from last year some things have improved some things have either stayed the same or gotten worse but to suggest that this Kings

Team is guaranteed to be a first round exit or is likely to be a first round exit after every single loss but dismiss some of the wins that this Kings team has had now I I mean if you’ve listened to lockon Kings over the course of this

Season you know that I’ve had concerns about this group especially with too much of a focus on the defensive end taking away from this Kings team offensively I still don’t think offensively this team has more for more than a handful of games played to the level that they’re capable at on the

Offensive end of the floor and the defense statistically has gotten better this Kings team is in the middle of the pack it definitely could still improve there are times where it looks Dreadful but it has gotten better the Kings defense was one of the only reasons they

Had a chance to even come back in this game tonight they didn’t allow them I mean they fell down by 22 points in this one but they didn’t it didn’t look like it was trending towards a blowout really Sacramento did a good job defensively not allowing the t-wolves to pull away

When the offense was struggling so you can feel the way that you want to feel if you do feel uncomfortable with the idea of this group as it is going into the playoffs and think it’s less likely because of those teams in the west out there like the Pelicans or maybe the

T-wolves even though the Kings have beaten them once or or whatever team the Los Angeles Clippers if if you’re worried about those matchups and think if the Kings face those teams they’re going to be first round exits I’m not telling you you’re wrong I’m just saying

We don’t have to have this kind of reaction after every single King’s loss when still more often than not the kings are winning and they’re doing so while still not playing their best basketball and that’s something that Mike Brown has has talked a lot about and been pretty

Consistent with so far this season they’re pleased with where they’re at being 17 and 11 they’re pleased being six games over 500 at Christmas despite the fact that offensively they have not played to their their standards or to their expectations or as well as they know they’re capable of playing and

They’ve dealt with the injuries that they have dealt with so you can feel how you want to feel please don’t make please don’t take this as like Matt George is telling me I can’t be frustrated after losses that’s not the case at all I’m just saying we don’t

Have to have this kings are in trouble or the Kings are are are guaranteed or likely to be first round exit reactions after every single Kings loss this season there are consistent issues there are clear concerns that’s on Monty McNair in the king’s front office to

Figure out and Mike Brown to try and plug those holes and put Band-Aids on it as best as possible with the players that he has until the front office makes changes but until then this team is still in a pretty good spot now there are of course concerns with certain

Players and needing to upgrade certain players the first two names that come to mind pretty consistently are two of your starters which is not a good thing Kevin herder who tonight had just two points one of seven shooting from the field one rebound one assist he has not been

Playing well he’s back in a slump and if we’re going to be super critical of of Harrison Barnes as critical of as we’ve been this season at times last season we have to be critical of of Kevin herder too who is taking a step back and when

He’s in his valleys the Kings seem to struggle and it’s hard for them to make up when they’re starting shooting guard is struggling that much I’m not going to talk too much about that tonight I think that’s a conversation for another time with Kevin Harrison Barnes tonight only

12 points three of six shooting from the field three rebounds did have seven points on a perfect three of three in the fourth quarter he was part of that Sacramento comeback so I I liked what I saw from from Harrison to some extent tonight and he continues to to score

Double digits here in this month of December uh so he’s doing better there and then you have the inconsistent depth of this king’s team right you have Javale McGee Chris Duarte uh Sasha venkov Keon Ellis Davon Mitchell even to some extent Trey lyes although he also

Had a good second half for the Kings like the depth of Sacramento is in question too so there’s obvious ways where Monty and this king’s team can look to make upgrades and and needs to kind of sharpen up and clean up the edges of this roster a little bit right

I’m not saying there are any issues at all but again we don’t have to go too far into the realm of this king’s team is doomed every single time they lose a game I thought Trey lyes uh I mean I thought the kings in general showed really really good fight in the second

Half of this game particularly in the fourth quarter a 17-2 fourth quarter run to come back from down 22 points to make a game of it late Keegan Murray is becoming that dude in front of our very eyes he wasn’t doing much at all in the first half third quarter kind of started

To get going and then fourth quarter he explodes for 10 of his 20 points shot four of four from the field in the fourth quarter ultimately for the night he finishes with 20 points eight of 16 shooting from the field seven rebounds and three steals he was the guy he and

Harrison Barnes and Trey LS were the guys that were that were kind of spearheading that comeback attempt because dear Fox was not doing much damont sabonis was not doing much and we’ll talk about them a little bit later on Trey lles to 10 points four of eight shooting from the field seven rebounds

Three assists I I was ready to Glow about him in the fourth quarter that he had and then he had that really bad turnover he was trying to swing the ball or kick the ball out to Harrison Barnes ended up throwing a pass right to Anthony Edwards who got the steal then

The dunk on the other end that pretty much snuffed out Sacramento’s comeback attempt Kings fall 110 to9 8 tonight ultimately 4 and two during this six game home stand you want to win more often than you lose at home so it’s good to see Sacramento I think do the bare

Minimum which is go four and two during this home stand and given the the the the teams that they played they they won games they absolutely should have won they lost games that it makes sense why they may might lose it we still would have lik to have seen them play better

In those two losses regardless some good and bad from this home stand overall today’s episode of the the locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by better Help Therapy mental health it’s so important nowadays and if you’re considering giving therapy a try check out better help look during the holiday

Betterhelp.com lockon NBA today to get 10% off of your first month that’s betterhelp hp.com lockon NBA all right we had two major battles tonight between the Kings and the uh the the Minnesota Timberwolves the first one was the Battle of two young Stars a battle that I was very much looking

Forward to dearen Fox and Anthony Edwards and for the most part this battle did not disappoint ant tonight 34 points to lead all scores 13 of 27 from the field 10 assists five rebounds five turnovers I love watching ant play I just love it the energy that he plays

With the aggressiveness that he plays with uh the reason why I say he loves playing in the the golden one Center is because I think last season when he was here he was asked about playing here and he said this is one of his favorite if

Not his favorite arena in the league to play and he always seems to play well here he likes the atmosphere likes the fans and of course a lot of us heard that and when okay maybe the Kings can use that to kind of attract him hey come

To Sacramento Aunt please play for the Sacramento Kings and let me tell you if the Kings somehow had this group with Anthony Edwards added on it’s not GNA happen it’s never gonna happen the t-wolves would be dumb to let Anthony Edwards go but if Anthony Edwards could be on this

King’s roster with Fox and Keegan and sabonis and monk oh my freaking goodness this team is absolutely a championship Contender but one we can dream right I love watching a play he was so much fun tonight plays with great energy uh and uh he did what he was supposed to do now

Dearen Fox for the most part did as well I said the Kings need Superstar Fox if they want to have a chance in this game especially missing Malik Monk and on the second night of a back toback well dearen was playing really really well to start this game despite the Kings having

A rough first half dear was doing his job he had 20 points at halftime but he ended tonight’s game with just 27 points shot 10 of 23 from the field six assists four rebounds two steals turned the ball over three times here’s the worst part about dearen Fox’s game tonight 27

Points doing what he does except fourth quarter Fox was nowhere nowhere to be found zero points 0 of six shooting in the fourth quarter while the kings were making their run and making their push and getting back into the game dearon Fox wasn’t not just it’s not that he

Wasn’t the Catalyst of it which he normally is he wasn’t involved in it really at all it was Keegan Murray it was Trey Lyles and it was Harrison Barnes that were kind of leading that push I give a ton of credit to Jaden McDaniels like I think like Jaden

McDaniels to me played maybe the best one-on-one defense against dearen Fox that I’ve seen certainly this season and maybe in the last like two or three seasons like he did a fantastic job making dear’s life a living hell to where de’arra late was trying to get to

His mid-range shots and and get shots up and and McDaniels either cut off his path to the rim or blocked his shot like Jaden McDaniels just played sens defense on dear and I didn’t know if anybody is was capable of doing that so Jaden absolutely has my respect he had it

Before tonight but tonight in that fourth quarter he was essential to keeping fourth quarter fox out of this game I also spoke with dearon after the game and I asked him like what is the balance of when you had three different guys that were were were playing well

And were were thriving the way that ly’s um Murray and Barnes were like how much do you get them involved and kind of turn controll over to them versus I’m the star it’s the fourth quarter I need to go I need to to to make my contribution Deen’s answer to that was

Pretty simple he said a couple things but the main thing to understand is is how he ended the question he basically said I got to be better in the fourth quarter so de’arra knows he kind of dropped the ball a little bit de’arra knows that he did not play well in the

Fourth quarter he knows that Jaden McDaniels definitely got the best of him and the Sacramento Kings I’m not saying that’s the reason they lost this game by any means but had gotten more of a fourth quarter Fox amidst that run that they put together maybe just maybe the

Kings could have pulled off this Chris Christmas miracle comeback the other battle was the Battle of the big men damand sabonis versus Rudy goar sabonis finished with his second straight triple double 17 points seven of 12 shooting from the field 10 rebounds 10 assists it’s amazing that I could even say this

I don’t know if I’ve ever said this before ever the player that got a triple double lost the battle Rudy goar outplayed damont sabonis tonight big sabonis fan huge Kings Homer Matt George here saying Rudy goar beat sabonis despite domas having a triple double so maybe fantasy-wise you like

The performance that that domas gave you better than Rudy gave you although I think their point totals will be pretty close but ultimately goar had more of a noticeable significant impact on this game he finished with 21 points 10 of 13 from the field 17 rebounds two blocks

It’s not just the fact that he gets blocks in his Rim protection it’s his presence in the paint that gives guys like dearon Fox hesitation uh he he made life difficult for damanda sabonis absolutely dominated the matchup in the first half I give a lot of credit to

Sabonis he turned things around in the second half played much more physical was attacking the glass grabbing rebounds trying to score um was being physical himself defensively and not letting Rudy goar have as many looks at the rim and get as many dunks as the rim

At the Rim as he had in the first half so I give sabonis credit for adjusting and turning things around in the second half to help give the Kings a chance to win this game but overall this matchup the Knight goes to Rudy goar he outplayed domas especially in that first

Half and while part of me wants to say if you’re domas that can’t happen especially on a night where you’re short-handed without Malik monk we’re talking about he’s playing against a a defensive player of the year now maybe Rudy goar shouldn’t be scoring 21 points like that’s that’s fair I think Rudy goar’s

Career high is like 35 or 37 something like that so he’s done this before but maybe you shouldn’t be giving up 21 points to the defensive player of the year center right let him have the impact that he’s going to have on your offense but don’t let him slow your

Offense down and then get his offense going at the same time and Jaden McDaniels kind of did the same thing I think McDaniels finished with like 20 points or something like that tonight while also shutting down Fox at the end that’s that’s where you give this t-wolves team a lot of credit because

They have good Defenders who are making positive offensive impacts this season that’s why the t-wolves are one of the best teams in the NBA and at the top of the Western Conference but Rudy no he shouldn’t have scored 21 points but being beat by Rudy goar is something

That a handful of seasons ago when Rudy was winning defensive player the Year Awards in Utah it wouldn’t have seemed as insane as it is now or as it feels right now not making an excuse for domas he lost this battle tonight I’m glad he’s still made an impact and and and

Tried to uh tried to do what he could do to help this Kings team win but the Knight belongs to Rudy goar and that’s the bottom line like I mentioned at the top of the show today’s episode of the lockon Kings podcast is also brought to you by prize picks now

Prize picks is the number one way to play daily fantasy sports the way prize picks works it’s just you versus the prize picks projected numbers you don’t have to worry about playing anybody else including those sharks and pro gamblers out there it’s just you versus the

Numbers you pick two to players and over or rather more or less than their projected numbers so like for Anthony Edwards tonight it was 29 and a half points for dearen Fox tonight it was 28 and a half points so what I ended up doing tonight I had a a kind of brutal

Night I still one because I got four out of five picks correct I just needed dearen Fox to score two more points he just had to score one basket in the fourth quarter for me to hit all five and cash out with a major payday un fortunately it wasn’t my night for that

It’s a bad beat in that sense but it’s a fun way to play so many different Kings media members so many different Kings fans that I talk to and get involved with pregame play this discuss prize picks and we have a lot of fun with it so make sure you are getting involved

And playing the prize picks action plus when you win they offer safe and fast withdrawals for you so you can get that money out quickly and like prize picks offers like an unheard of insurance policy essentially to where let’s say uh uh let’s say dearen fox got injured or

Or something happened in the first half he wasn’t available to play in the second half well then that pick would have been voided so I wouldn’t guaranteed to lose it it would just be voided or it would be a wash essentially so it’s like an insurance policy to to

Not penalize you when something un something uncharacteristic happens in a game or something that’s outside of the realm of basketball like an injury actually happens prize picks is a ton of fun plus you can Eno enjoy football action and other sports on prize picks as well so go to priz picks.com lockon

NBA use code locked on NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 again that’s promo code locked on NBA for a first deposit match up to $100 prize picks his daily fantasy sports Made Easy well if it isn’t perfectly clear how important Malik Monk Is to the Sacramento Kings tonight I don’t

Know what more you need to see like Malik’s absence was not just noticeable it was felt in this Arena right Malik is such an Energizer Bunny such a spark plug he’s like Edge your seat got to pay attention got to watch when he is on the floor this Kings team really struggled

With energy and playmaking in that second unit which is why Mike Brown has continued to have Malik come off the bench in that six-man role despite the fact that he’s shown more of a capability to to be a starter some times than Kevin hder and some of the other

Guards that have gotten opportunities ahead of him as a starter Malik is essential to that second unit and with without him this Kings team just simply does not look the same I’m not saying the Kings would have won tonight’s game had Malik monk played but a lot of that

Struggle offensively in the first half especially I think comes from this team trying to figure out how to handle those minutes when Malik monk was out of the game and dearen fox was off the floor and speaking of dearon fox too like again Jaden McDaniel’s full credit to

Him for the defense that he played on dearon in that fourth quarter I think dear’s fourth quarter would have been significantly easier had monk been out there with him which typically monk is Kevin herder struggling this much okay Malik you’re you’re the guy that’s in there you’re a secondary ball handler

You’re taking some of the pressure and some of the attention off of dearen and if McDaniels and and the the t-wolves are going to focus on dearen as heavily as they were in the fourth quarter monk has said before this season they can’t stop both of us so maybe monk could have

Gotten himself going hit some big shots attacked the rim played his two-man game with damona sabonis or Keegan Murray or whoever it may have been I just you really saw all across this game tonight in multiple aspects the kings were missing Malik the Kings need Malik back and I’m not just

Talking about from this uh this injury that he’s dealing with um and it’s just like a like a soreness injury I can’t remember exactly what it was he’s been kind of questionable for the last two or three games playing a little bit banged up so hopefully he can get healthy and

Get right because the Kings definitely need him back but also he’s a free agent this off season the Kings need Malik monk back as this team is right now Malik is a top three most important player on this team absolutely right now the Kings need him and when he’s not

There his absence is sorely sorely felt well it’s not the result that we wanted going into Christmas time right no beam in the sky no Christmas beam but still the uh the atmosphere here inside the golden one Center was great so many fun King’s ugly sweaters

And things like that I got to meet so many of you uh who who came by different people from out of town who are in town for a Christmas vacation or or or or they live outside of Sacramento but they come home for the holidays and they came

To King’s games and say that uh they listen to lockon Kings from wherever they are I appreciate all of you so much thank you for taking the time to come by to say hi and of course for supporting this podcast I hope everybody all of you have a very very very Merry Christmas

Just so you know uh for the next two days Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I will be taking that time off for for family and I’ll be working at abc1 but taking a bit of a break from the lock on Kings podcast four freaking home games

In one week was a lot leading into Christmas and I I love being here in the golden one Center had so much fun but I’m actually actually kind of excited for the Kings to go on the road now when they return to action it’ll be the day after Christmas December 26 they’ll be

In Portland to take on the Trailblazers that’s absolutely absolutely a winnable game remember the Kings just barely beat Portland in this building earlier this season but that was while dearen Fox was out with an injury the Trailblazers are playing a little bit better basketball but ultimately the Kings should be

Winning that game you look at those the upcoming five games a three-game road trip for Sacramento Portland then Atlanta then Memphis the Grizzlies are I think three and0 now since John Morant returned so that team is a little bit different from what their record might indicate and then they return home uh

The final two games of this five game Set uh they host the Charlotte Hornets and then they host the Orlando Magic The Magic are playing really well this season too as usual in this five-game stretch regardless of of home or on the road or who the competition is but

Especially with some of these teams that the kings are playing three and2 over that five game stretch is the minimum expectation uh or rather the minimum uh yeah minimum expectation four- one is the true expectation 5-0 is the goal and it’s definitely possible for this Kings team again have yourself a very merry

Christmas thank you for tuning in all week long to all these crazy games and all year long as it’s crazy we’re going into 2024 before we know it your support is incredible I think you so so so much can’t wait to have you join me on the

Next episode of lockon Kings until then my name is Matt George you’ve been listening to the lock on Kings podcast part of the lockon podcast Network Merry Christmas

Matt George reacts to the Sacramento Kings loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, continuing their 2nd night of a back-to-back losing streak.

  1. Maybe the Kings can take a big swing. While I think the Warriors would be very reluctant to trade Draymond to the Kings, they just might want to move on. Is there some sort of exception to the salary matching? I think there might be and a draft pick might be enough, maybe with a bench guy. But talk about a defensive shot in the arm.
