Guys to consume at your convenience so the way that works is uh at some point norlander will just email me a bunch of emails you guys have sent and we’ll sort through the questions and then uh I’ll get one and he’ll get one is that

Roughly more or less how it works it is and I wanna right off the top thank uh everyone that sends in questions um we cannot remotely get to to all of them because people said it sure looks like you tried no no no G it looks like you

Tried GP I narrowed this you don’t understand I save you all of the backend work okay I look through every sing I trust me I read every single I know but just like this dude wants to do a 21 minute read about anything literally anything the

Longer you the show is gonna go now we got an hour 45 minute mailbag episode because he got 47,000 questions okay this is always dangerous to stay off the top but one I promise you this is not going to be an hour 45 we’re my goal is

To be Swift on this also people genuinely like the episode and our hey our bosses also appreciate when we do this so I’m not going to say no to that I do appreciate everyone like the stuff that I’m sparing you from is you know people are pointing out that dodo birds

Were an answer in a recent New York Times crossword puzzle our names are on street signs across the country they send in pictures uh people have license plates with Guster on them they email that to the show random correspondents about where to go and what to see games

And um all sorts of stuff so we appreciate all that I do want to give a special shout out to Kathy K who is based in Germany and uh huge Purdue fan she sent a couple of updates uh as of late so I at least want to recognize her

We’ve we even had a guy from Philly who recently um he was at the UCLA versus Nova game and he’s a Nova fan there was a bunch of UCLA fans behind him and he kept turning around and saying that mck Cronin was the best coach in UCLA

History and uh and then he said quote a dude lost it and said I was the dumbest basketball fan he had ever met so I I I very much appreciate the correspondence know that your emails aren’t getting read and it would be an entirely other show if I was simply reading random

Thoughts and and from everyone so I appr there’s another like there was a group of dudes like guys being dudes dudes Rock going to a UMass little Marry m game and they recorded a video I I app I would like to see some of that stuff I I’ll forward that to you

I think they’re all Mary MAAC fans they sent that in I’ll forward that to you offline as well so uh so I appreciate the correspondence again if you want to continue I don’t know when our next mailbag will be because we have a nice little window here nor nobody loves to

Rapids Iowa so I have boots on the ground covering the Hawkeye Cyclones and Panthers I absolutely love my job and I want to cover college sports for the rest of my life I remember vividly driving back from a high school basketball game that I was covering listening to the podcast and hearing you

Two riff about Fran mcaffrey and Kermit Roosevelt the second and third I was alone in a car a few miles outside of debuk Iowa legitimately losing my mind laughing that’s when I knew I had to email the show thanking the three of you for your constant uplift throughout the

Good times and bad times in my life thank you best and always one of us Jack wasn’t that sweet it is it is very sweet jack we very much appreciate you I’ll uh I’m going to highlight one more heartfelt one then I got to get to a fellow who just loves contacting the

Show and then we’ll get into the questions I promise um this one is a little bit of an older one but i’ I’ve kept it around for a minute it’s it’s uh his name is Christian he writes I just want to let you know that I truly appreciate your podcast as a college

Basketball fan and specifically a zag lifer I like to get a better sense of the Topography of the game and its totality and not just from the point of view of my team I’m quite sure I’m not the only one who feels this way but your banter coupled with highle Acumen for

The sport we love is a great combination that amplifies your knowledge and Jo you remind me of my brother and I I’m once again quite sure others would feel this way too and the dialogue that we would exchange on a regular basas I am clearly parish and my brother is clearly

Norlander it’s not lost in me that you guys sometimes switch quote unquote roles which heightens the comic effect for me and others from the refrain of the trivia time which is Matt’s refrain that GP borrows to the lilting hi YouTube and peacock sound effects the chemistry that is generated from an

Organic natural and heartfelt place I believe it’s important to be specific on criticism and praise I’m sure you deal with the surplus of both with ha half coock fans lovers more of us than them and haters thank you for your ability to speak not only about the sport we love

But to do it with heartfelt humor and at times eloquence I just wanted you to know I acknowledge it and appreciate what you’re doing he had even more but I I wanted to cut it for brevity um we received a few emails like that so I at least want to acknowledge the people

That take the time to send those long emails in and uh and a few people had actually noted Parish uh and I and I pride the podcast on this like we’re not going to sit here tap you know hitting ourself on the back of the whole

Show this is I know you will this is uh something that I’m glad is is a feature of the podcast but it’s certainly not something that I intentionally seek out to do it’s just part of the the flow of it I do enjoy how On Any Given episode

We can go from a very serious topic to you veering dangerously outside the boundaries of what is and is not appropriate to talk about on a public forum and for that I think a lot of people continue to come back so I appreciate the oh if you like that on

The island college basketball podcast you could check it you should check it out on the Gary Paris show because it’s even more all over the place no that’s why you can’t pay attention when uh people get frustrated like you see in the comments sometimes and like I thought this was a college basketball

Podcast or uh you just picked that game but didn’t offer any analysis instead you just talked about how Indiana’s the fourth best team in the state of Indiana there are a lot of people out there talking about college basketball from the second they start till the

Second day in you can find them ain’t none of them doing Bad Bunny numbers I’m I’m unaware of what the Bad Bunny number is but I’m gonna take your somebody told me somebody told me if you think you’re doing well just say you’re doing Bad Bunny numbers okay there we go

I hope we are doing uh Bad Bunny numbers but I can’t for this is the point and this is I learned this a long time ago on radio this is the for every person who gets frustrated when you’re not talking about sports they not talking about basketball you gain five who were

There because they’d rather hear about that stuff than the actual college basketball without a doubt and listen that’s what we’re trying to do on the show like give you some like real analysis modern day Bad Bunny and then you know it’s we’re also you know I

Never try and lose sight of the fact that we’re a national pod I want to give some love and attention to uh some schools outside the mainstream but we also like there’s a lot of people that want to tune into the show and be like

Okay what did I what do I need to know over the past 4872 or week this past week in basketball from like you know the the four or five biggest topics so we try and peas all audiences and we appreciate our listenership it has never

Been better than it has been in the year 2023 and with that said Bad Bunny I’m like the Mississippi Bad Bunny one more correspondence because uh a man named Michael who’s a septo genarian he has been emailing the show and you know what keep keep doing it

Michael I can’t promise you that I’m gonna highlight you in another uh mailbag to come I genuinely appreciate your Devotion to the show um this is only two of five or six I could picked out and this is probably these two emails are probably a month apart um he

Emails this isn’t the first time in an email he brought this up postmarital sex I keep waiting for you to give a shout out to postmarital sex I enjoy it especially for septo denarians I have nothing against premarital sex and in fact I can even remember when I was one

Of us but you’re disrespecting your elders by neglecting a different quote unquote us please do not make me sick Gary Williams my fellow TP searan on you he’s undoubtedly a connoisseur of post-marital sex and he doesn’t take kindly to being disrespected on another note you made disparaging remarks about

Septo genarian which I find greatly offensive I’m 73 years old and I challenge you to find someone who does my job any better than I do Parish might be thinking what is this guy talking about I’ll tell you yeah I will be rooting for Leonard Hamilton to win the

ACC and make you KY Crow not only that but you still refuse to acknowledge the Wonder of postmarital sex I will never cast aspersions on premarital sex in fact my memory is good enough that I have very fond memories of those times I am not making this email up this comes

From an actual human being that loves listen to the show Michael I’m Gonna Save You public from knowing your last name and then I got one more quick for you here he also emailed in this is I don’t know two weeks later during your big 10 preview you

Seemed unable to stop talking about the 63 teams that have made the kenpom end of season top 25 over the last s years you even went so far as to breathlessly read the names in alphabetical order of all the teams who have made the coveted

List see we pissed them off perish oh no that’s somehow I miss Marilyn somebody else pointed that out to me as you breathlessly trumpeted the results of your meticulous research I did not hear the name of my Marilyn terpens right I worried that I’m perhaps getting a

Little scile so I decided to check well well please correct me if I’m wrong but until I hear evidence that the turfs do not belong on the list I will see an anger and await your apology it is bad enough that you disrespect your loyal septarian Audience by refusing to

Acknowledge the sublime nature of postmarital sex but now you kick turp Nation to the curb please don’t continue to let me down unbelievable stuff okay what’s my Fell’s name again Mike Mike or Michael I think it’s Michael yeah yeah Michael Michael okay here’s what I would

And 70 and potentially 80 year olds we’ve we’ve received uh quite a few I don’t quite a few we at least three or four emails in the past year from uh from the folks that have hit hey we got we’ve got we’ve got uh we’ve got teenagers and even pre-teens which I

Which I feel that I should remind you about that uh given what you know we sometimes talk and then we got 73 year old Michael and all things in between I like it like that I like to be able to appeal to all audiences like that we appreciate

Detroit Pistons right now okay there was a longer question here but I I simplified this let’s start with the obvious we don’t think any team’s beating the Detroit Pistons and as we record this show and by the way he means college basketball teams corre corre he’s not asking about the New York

Giants you know what the Los Angeles Dodgers I’m pretty certain could be the Detroit Pistons right now there’s no the Dodgers are about to go 130 and 32 I mean it is outrageous it really is on a fundamental I’ll tell you and I let’s let’s try to stay on track here um

I don’t know if I’m more interested or less interested in baseball because of what the Dodgers are doing I haven’t decided I don’t know um I’m a casual baseball fan we’ll follow my Cubs here and there but I don’t get dialed in until at least the summer the Dodgers

Doing what they’re doing I don’t know if it makes me more or less likely to uh you just here’s the thing you just you just go if you’re NLS team you just go we’re playing for a wild card and if you’re NL Central NL East you say hey

We’re not better than them but we might be in a short series against them you never you know Show’s hurt or you just never know you just got to get it’s a lot like the NBA Playoffs you know who wins the NBA title every year or at

Least goes far in the playoffs every year the healthier teams the healthier teams like the teams that are healthy when the playoffs start you tell me who’s available who’s not when the NBA playoffs start I’ll tell you who’s gonna do well and who’s not and so that the

Key with the NBA is like okay if everybody’s healthy we might not be as good as this team or that team okay but everybody’s not going to be healthy that’s that’s the thing if you’re trying to look for a way to keep hope if you’re a national league team or just a

Baseball team other than the Dodgers you don’t have to be better than them over 162 games because you’re not going to be you just have to beat them in a short series or maybe even a seven game series and the nature of baseball makes that more realistic than the roster mismatch

Might suggest all right so the question here is which uh which team could beat the Pistons none no college team could beat but the question here’s the here’s what we want to say who is and I don’t I don’t know Paris answer Paris doesn’t know mine which college team do we think

Could lose by the fewest amount of points in a 40-minute game against the Detroit Pistons as we record this the Pistons have lost 25 straight you’re going to listen to a few days after we’ve done the mailback episode so that losing streak could either be OV extended it’s probably GNA get extended

And be an all-time record there um I will give you mine first I considered three teams I considered Kentucky Connecticut and my pick is Arizona and right now with Arizona’s roster construction Tommy Lloyd coaching he he’s he employs an NBA esque kind of scheme I think if the Pistons and

Arizona played a 40-minute basketball game and we’re going to say this is college rules uh you know college three-point line all that I’m giving all the rules the benefit of the college team I would say a Pistons Arizona game would be 108 to 70 Detroit wins okay

Just got that just so we’re clear that’s a 38 Point margin for the Detroit Pistons just to make sure everybody understands what we’re talking about here and why this is always I’m not trying to pick on anybody I I I think ail knew the answer would be zero but

Like this is never a serious question I don’t care how good the college basketball team is or how bad the NBA team is there is no scenario where the college team is better than the NBA team perod it’s just it’s not are you ready for this yeah Marcus Sasser was a first

Team allamerican last season he is now the 10th leading scorer for the Pistons that’s what we’re talking about correct yes the the Pistons could Tred out a starting lineup and this wouldn’t even be their best one this is just one with recent college players you’ll recognize this wouldn’t even be their

Best lineup it’s just one that you’ll recognize Kate Cunningham Marcus Sasser Jaden Ivy Marvin baggley and Jaylen durren that team would go undefeated deated in college basketball like likely yes likely that being said zona’s got some dudes it’s got a really oh and we could bring Isaiah Stewart James wisman Kevin Knox

Alec Burks and boy Bo boan bogdanovich Off the Bench it’s not swaying me as much but still it’s not going to be close are you are you larger than 40 points in a 40-minute game what’s do you have a do you have a score guess or no

If you told the NBA players you go win this by 40 and I’ll give you a million dollars each they would win it by 40 there we go you just never know when somebody’s going to get bored up 28 or up 34 but if you told them I got a

Million dollars for every one of you go win it by 40 they could win it by 40 they could they could win it by however what what so so to answer your question okay who could maybe play them closer than 40 just the closest who’s who’s

Giving them the tightest game yeah uh of the teams you named the only one we’re matched up on is Kentucky and that’s just a talent thing right like ky’s just got NBA Talent um and they do have a couple of older guys and Trey Mitchell and Antonio Reeves I don’t think

Kentucky would play them close yeah I picked Arizona because it’s got a bunch of older dudes and in addition to the way they play that’s why Arizona was my pick okay um my I I thought about just going with something that would be so different than what they’re used to

Dealing with that maybe it could work like a Zack Eed but I just think Purdue guards would get eat up I could not put I could not put Purdue on the list because it’s a really good college team but when I looked at it honestly parish

And I and I looked at about like eight to 10 different teams Purdue was like one of the last teams that I even considered being in the conversation because Ed’s destroyed in pick and roll and the the guards are would be completely overwhelmed at this stage of

Their life right I mean they’re just I mean they just it’d be bigger guards more athletic guards they just I mean like I turned Kate Cunningham and Jay iy loose on the Purdue back court I mean flesh Lor is gonna have to go down the court and just hoist from 36

Feet and hope not there’s a hand not in his face right so I so I eliminated Purdue there I think um you mentioned old like if you’re looking for old Memphis is old I considered yeah like Memphis at least got a bunch of guys that are I mean Memphis has got

Memphis’s best starting lineup might be older than Detroit’s lineup uh it might be I didn’t look but it’s it’s older than I know Memphis is older than at least one or two different lineups in the NBA I’ve seen that put out there this year yeah so it would you

Know Memphis would be one Kentucky I think because of just the talent Memphis just because they’re older guys and is like you know they got two former McDonald’s all-americans so it’s they got some Talent there as well naquin Tomlin is now eligible he’s an older guy

I to be clear I don’t think any of these teams will mess around with any with the Detroit Pistons but Memphis is somebody I would at least physically they could maybe hold their own because they’re not hold their own they could compete because they’re older and they they wouldn’t get overwhelmed physically but

The list is short and by short we mean just list of teams that could try to stay with within 25 yeah exactly as a reminder we bring up Kentucky uh it lost to UNC Wilmington right I mean what but I I do appreciate the question we put a

Little twist on it because I haven’t frankly I’ve never heard anyone take that question just ask okay who’s gonna lose by the fewest amount uh next question Tim from Indianapolis emails and he responded to a topic we had in the preseason I actually I appreciate this perspective he said it was quite

The dichotomy to hear norlander and GP talk about how little value high school recruits have the question is not as simple as you would rather as would you rather have the 75th best player from High School versus the 75th best transfer which is what we talked about

Um some weeks back he says it’s more like would you rather have one year of the 75th best transfer um or would you rather have three years of the 75th best high school player um after you get to develop them year after year um the bench is still long enough for some

Internal envelopment explain yourselves I think this is a good distinction here now I’ll also say you aren’t necessarily getting one year of a player in the transfer portal so the way that you framed it Tim also is a little bit uh um a little bit skewed but it is a good

Distinction um I would say if it was simply a TOA do I want one year of a top 75 transfer or three years of a top 75 high school player in that broadly speaking I would take Parish I would take three years of the kid ranked 75th

And trust that he will develop into something a bit more reliable it might bring more stability of your program again you’re promising me that I’m getting three years I’m not getting them for year two year two and then he’s transferring out um if it was simply one

Year for one year or one year against three years excuse me I would probably I think my line there is you told me i’ get the 40th best transfer for one year or three years I would probably go transfer at that point somewhere along those lines uh but it’s also not exactly

That simple I appreciated the question it made me think about it I was wondering what your thoughts might be GP my thoughts were that the premise is completely flawed okay like you’re you’re setting up a a flaw wall premise like that’s not real why do you have to

Pick between one year of a transfer and three years of a high school player are you ready for this Jaden Bradley was a high school player went to Alabama for one year they only had him for one year now he’s at Arizona right now Alabama’s got Mark

Sears he’s a transfer he’s in his second year so Alabama in the exact same gar took high school players and a transfer Brandon Miller Jaden Bradley are both gone after being high school players one year mark series is still there he’s there longer than the high school

Players Umar Balo is a transfer he’s in his third season at Arizona what are you talking about you you you’re allowed to keep transfers more than one year yeah yeah for sure yeah and you’re not guaranteed to keep high school players um more than one and the in the internal

Development what are we talking about that’s not even a real thing anymore in college basketball like that’sa like you got like Fletcher lawyer as player who would who would apply to that kind of situation like he’s not going to he’s probably not going to transfer from Purdue wasn’t a

Top 70 recruit or actually flusher might have been but you get what I’m saying like there are guys that are still in that 50 to 100 range that are going to stay like three years or so and develop and get to be better player yeah but but

But how about this go anybody anybody you want do a research project find me in the past couple of years players who are ranked outside of the top 50 of their High School class who do not play as a freshman or sophomore they’re just barely players um then then then find out how

Many how many of those players actually stay three years at the same school you don’t you they don’t they if you don’t if they don’t play they transfer I have had actual High major coaches tell me they will no longer take a high school player they do not think

Can at least be a rotation player for them as as a freshman because if you have them on your bench all you’re doing is developing them and then they’re going to the transfer portal and all you did was work with them to get them better for somebody else so I just think

The whole premise is flawed and I I will double down on what I said previously broadly speaking I would be building my college basketball team through the transfer portal not through high school like it’s different if you’re Kentucky it’s different if you’re Duke if you can get the five-star oneandone projected

Lottery picks yeah I would take three or four of them a year if I could but outside of that absolutely you tell me I can take the 50th best high school player or the 50th best transfer give me the 50th best transfer and I don’t even

Need stipulations on it I don’t need to know how many years anybody else is going to stay I’m just the 50 the the 50th rank transfer is more valuable than the 50th ranked high school player and the if you and if you’re making decisions based on well the 50th ranked

High school player might not play for me in year one but I can develop him and then we’ll have then you’re just betting on things that are not guaranteed you are more likely to lose that guy than you are to actually develop him into a nice two or three year player yeah and

There are obviously exceptions to this uh which makes the sport fun like Purdue it’s it’s not going by that model Marquette not going by that model Yukon did bring in cam watch and see they will they yeah they will but Shak is now not done it two years in a row well wait

Till this team gets blown up watch what he does I’m not saying it won’t happen I’m saying to this point Marquette was not uh abiding by that and even Duke now Duke is one that is different as GP mentioned uh but for the most part this

Is the way that it’s going I’ll tell you the one to keep an eye on okay Missouri Missouri has like a top five recruiting class class of 2024 right now yeah I think all of them are ranked outside of the top 40 or 50 I I respect Dennis Gates he’s

Obviously knows more about building rosters than I do and he’s been very good at it but I’d be real hesitant about bringing that many sub 50 freshmen into the SEC at the same time yeah that’s a that’s a that’s a good note there by the way Fletcher lawyer 122 in

The prospect rankings all right next question um Jordan ask uh who do we think is the nicest fan base yeah we often hear about fan bases that are mean or whatever but wondering the other side I got five I put I thought bases I went I went through every Power conference

And I created a list of what I thought was the five how many I I wonder if you left it the one but I’m I’m curious what you have here and this is this is a this is a curveball question I like this one I don’t have any come on man stop I

Think they’re I think fan bases are either mean or they’re just non-existent do you like do I have to remind you we had beaver fever talking to us a few years ago be fever was on our ass an Oregon State basketball fan was on our ass a couple of years ago

All right so here’s the thing I don’t care what the fan base is this is true with every fan base everyone they either like you or don’t say nothing they they like you or they stay quiet but eventually if they ever feel like you have slided them in any way and

By slide of them I mean rank them 16th instead of 15th you know what then they turn mean everyone it doesn’t matter which one and then when when you prove to be right about them they just disappear they never come back and say GP remember when I told you you were

Crazy having us all the way down at 16 it turns out we’ve lost three of our last four I get it now they never come back and say that they just disappear again and then they come back that’s the root of the Indiana’s internet is out because I went months without hearing

From them because when things go bad nobody says GP you were right or norlander you were right they just they just disappear I had Arkansas preseason 47 I still could prove to be wrong I haven’t heard from an Arkansas fan in a minute right now tell what how many

Times a week in the preseason where Arkansas fans calling you stupid relative to how many times over the past two weeks you’ve even heard heard a thing from Arkansas fan it’s not even comparable but at the same time at a certain point i’ I’ve told you this just

Get out of your mentions just get get get out of there don’t don’t don’t concern yourself with it I thought because of the fact that I don’t know if people know this Parish ranks 26 teams every single morning okay I don’t know if they know this or not and I thought

Maybe he would say I don’t know what that means he’s putting up some fingers again I thought he was I was trying to do 26 and I realized I didn’t know how to do it exactly so then I just started flashing signs like a catcher yeah yeah exactly

Or a gang member one of the two maybe a gang member catcher I thought maybe he would say you know what I like the question because there’s definitely you know this many that are not going to make the list but uh over the years I’ve noticed that maybe this fan base is a
