I’m so fucking fed up with how every single year in jazz franchise history we can play 60 seconds of perfect defense just for some dude to hit some bullshit contested 3 at the shot clock buzzer. God himself had this game decided

And even the semi open ones, that shit doesn’t go down on any other team I stg

  2. Stellar fight from the boys on the ass end of a tough 5 game road trip over the holidays to boot. On to the next

  3. GG. Thought we played really well in the second half. Just a couple blunders in the clutch (offensive foul on Kessler, not picking up the deflection leading to an open Murphy 3, not getting the rebound after Zion missed 2 FTs) combined with them just hitting all their shots in the clutch led to the L. Nice to see them keep it close and not roll over though. Thought Dunn played awesome in the fourth too.

  4. JC with a team leading 6 turnovers and negative +/-. I think he might have reaggrivated his injury and needs another couple games off.

  5. 3-2 on this road trip is great! Great effort and looking a lot better.

Can’t imagine it’s easy to be on a long road trip during the holidays either.

    GAME NOTES:

3-2 on the road trip is really good for us this season, which is a positive. Especially because our guys flew home for Christmas.

However, this game was very much a sloppy game. Even in the first quarter where we scored 37, we still played so sloppy. 18 turnovers as a team, with Clarkson having 6 himself. It felt like everytime he put the ball on the floor it was a turnover.

Also, fun fact, this was the 15th unique starting lineup we’ve used this season. 15 in 32 games… take that as you will.

Individually two players came ready to score for us, and it was Collin Sexton & Lauri Markkanen.f Everybody else struggled offensively in various aspects.

Collin Sexton was the heart of this team tonight. This turnaround he has had individually this year is unreal. He’s doing so much more than he did last season on less minutes. Tonight, 8-16 shooting, 3-6 from 3, 7-9 from the line for a game-high 26 points. He also provided some decent defense, although far from the best we’ve seen from him. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. No turnovers, steals, or blocks for him. He fueled the comeback in the fourth quarter hitting big shots and making the right reads.

Lauri Markkanen also played a decent game. Inside the arc, he shot 4-7, but just 3-12 from 3. He still finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds (6 of them offensive), 6 assists, 1 steal, and 3 turnovers. When the Pelicans blitzed him, he made the right reads and had some pretty nice passes. I’d argue this was one of the best passing games he’s had with us. I can’t remember seeing one of his passes picked off besides one in the backcourt off a rebound to JC where Zion disrupted it. A decent game for Lauri tonight, nothing too impressive.

The third best player could be argued between Dunn, Kessler, & John Collins, but nobody outside of Sexton & Markkanen had a great game.

Kessler probably takes the third best performance of the night for me. 11 points on 5-5 shooting (second straight game with a 3 point make!), 4 rebounds (3 of them offensive), 2 steals, and 2 blocks. He was matched up on Valanciunas all night, and made it rough for him to be a factor on both ends. He held JV to just 6 points and 4 rebounds. I’m glad that Kessler got the start tonight, and the offense looked pretty good with him starting with Dunn/Sexton/Lauri/Collins. I was kind of worried to see how the offense would function without Kelly to help facilitate, but it looked pretty good, at least in the first quarter.

Kris Dunn started tonight, although he played just 19 minutes, he finished with 7 points, 3-5 shooting, 1-3 from 3, and 2 assists. Not much of a factor on either end of the court, and I would’ve liked to have seen him matched up with Ingram a bit more.

John Collins played an interesting game. An absolute monster on the boards with a game-high 12, but he scored only 8 tonight. 3-7 shooting, 1-3 from 3. I’m not sure if the report that the Jazz were disappointed with him has hurt him mentally, as it seems like recently he hasn’t been as engaged in the offense and defense. His rebounding has been great and fairly consistent, but that’s about it. I would love to see more sets ran for him to try to get some lobs or early action for him.

Our bench unit was really bad tonight. George, Agbaji, THT, Clarkson, Fontecchio, and Olynyk combined for 29 points on 29 shots. Nobody really contributed which made this game pretty difficult to win. Pair that with them having 13 of our 18 turnovers and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Clarkson played terribly, 10 points, 3-11 shooting, 1-5 from 3, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 turnovers. Bad shots, bad decision making, bad handles, bad everything. Polar opposite of the last few games we’ve seen from him. But that’s just the Clarkson experience.

Fontecchio played just 14 minutes and didn’t impact the game too much. Was tied with Keyonte for a game-low -13, and looked off. He still shot 2-4 for 5 points, but his defensive effort wasn’t there. Credit to Ingram for being a middy magician and hitting damn near everything from the midrange.

THT played 6 minutes and had 2 points on 0-3 shooting. Besides nailing 2 free throws his statsheet shows a whole lotta 0’s, which accurately depicts his performance this game. It seemed like Hardy tried him out in the third quarter to try to get some offense rolling, but nothing happened with him in.

Keyonte didn’t play a good game. 4 points, 1-7 shooting, 1-5 from 3, 1-2 from the line, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 turnovers. -13 in his 22 minutes. I worry that he may be taking the Jordan Clarkson mentality when it comes to shooting, especially from 3. I’m glad that his confidence isn’t shaken, but his shooting woes haven’t really improved this season. At least his playmaking is there, although I would like his 2 turnovers to be cleaned up. He did have a nice oop to Agbaji and I believe one to Kessler as well.

ugly ugly game. Not too happy with what we put out on the floor. I feel like Hardy had a unique approach to guarding Ingram, which was to try a bunch of different defenders on him, which kind of worked. Ingram passed out of a lot of shots. He tried blitzing Zion, but Zion feasted and still found a way to score, or hit the open man.

I’m surprised the game was as close as it was. We shot poorly from the field and from 3, we turned the ball over too much, and we let their big 3 of CJ, Ingram, and Zion all drop 20+ on us. If we only had some bench production I feel like this would’ve been a victory.

    13-19.
